It used to be. It’s so far from that now. The majority of R&D now is around Aero which has little to no real world application. It’s more about marketing, and brand building now than anything.

Don’t disagree, but it’s in reaction to the FIA changing the aero specs constantly in order to try to slow the cars down.

Been like that since the 80s.

The real tech driver now is lemans prototypes. They trickle their stuff to F1 even.

Big get for McLaren. Will basically be their Toto Wolff.

Combined with Pat Fry and James Key coming in as tech director, should see some significant improvements.

Wow! Great news. Would really like to see that team challenging for podiums again and soon.

If that doesn't get them back to form for 2021, then they are doomed. Alot of talent there.

This. Atleast the last decade it used to be. Unfortunately they only have 1 or 2 “Factory” teams anymore and the rest are running spec chassis and NA motors.

The IMSA DPi stuff is basically LMP2 cars with bodywork to make them more brand identifiable. Under that they are one of 3 or 4 different chassis/engines that are approved.

There is actually very little R&D in motorsports anymore that relates back to road cars. Computer simulations have taken a lot of that need away.

Alonso is testing a Toyota Gazoo Dakar racer. Toyota says they will field a car for him if he wants to.

                            Fuck yes.

Dakar is awesome. Especially on bikes

Haha. Was watching a replay of some of the first stages and saw one of those trucks (they are amazing!) slow motion t-boning a stopped Toyota Gazoo beastie coming over a sand dune a bit hot.
