It is being streamed live so we can watch the car from the pits. We are using a Racecapture Pro MK3 system from Autosport Labs. Also connected to an Android tablet in the car that acts as our dashboard.

But there's a bigger point here. The 1-series is the last car that BMW engineered before the Germans, as a car-making culture, fell out of love with driving.

I just looked that up. Pretty neat. Are you using the cell network to send the data or wifi/Bluetooth? I would think the wifi/Bluetooth would only send the data when close enough (maybe just once a lap while near the pits?)

We are using the cell network option for coverage of the entire track.

Are you just pluggin it into the stock ECU and getting all of the info? Or do you have stand alone analog sensors for anything?

Both actually. Oil temp is from a stand alone sensor we added, as the car did not have one. The rest of the inputs are from the factory sensors. The car was switched from OBD2 to OBD1 so we had to go direct to the wiring for the sensors. Could no longer go to IBD2 port.

Next step is to add a wifi enabled GoPro to get data overlay on the video

Cool. The wifi go-pros suck. There is a second and a half delay, and you can send it more than 100ft without it breaking up. You'll need to use a separate transmitter/receiver, or use the system you have if its got inputs for that.

They insist on running without power steering. With the V6, and a disconnected power steering rack, the steering is heavy as fuck. Needed a death grip on the wheel, hands are completely blistered. Also could not cross my arms with the full containment seat. It is painful for me to watch as well.

    Ready for 2018.

Car is 100 lbs lighter. Finally managed to find an upgraded rear sway bar for it. Accusump and oil cooler added, and the collapsed flex pipe (was reduced to less than 1”) in header removed.

Collapsed flex pipe is what caused failure of previous motor. Flex was right under oil pan. Oil pan, pick up right to pump were turned completely blue from heat. We did not pick it up because oil temp sending unit only rated up to 250F. New sensor now installed that reads much higher.

It has officially been named “Rats Nest”. Mazda engineers in charge of wiring should be forced to eat all the stupid wiring.

Race (double 12 hours) is next weekend.

    Still no power steering.

Basically. Did some parts swapping to use the best of the intake manifold/throttle body/cams etc that came with the various versions of this motor. We also now have a complete spare motor ready to go, both motors were professionally built.

We met with CTV at Castrol Raceway last night. About 2 hours of interviews, filming, and I did some on track driving for them.

    #bigdeal2018

Car feels so much better than last year. Down 100 lbs, more grip, turns in better. Noticeable increase in power. Still pushes a bit.

Driving at only 8-9/10ths, was running nearly same lap times as best times from last year.

One big change, we are running Westlake Sport RS tires. Good grip for tires that are under $100. We will see how well they last.
