To my understanding the iPod/Phone/Pad GPS functionality does not allow for turn-by-turn or live navigation like the popular GPS devices from TomTom or Garmin. The GPS unit simply picks up on locations and stores them for use with applications. For navigation or live processing, you need a data plan (or WiFi).

I wonder how well a GPS cradle+Ipod Touch+Harrys would work?

IIRC the tomtom gps dock has its own gps, so yes, you could use an ipod touch with it for all your gps'ing needs.

Incorrect. On the iPhones you can use the internal GPS with paid apps for proper turn-by-turn. It's just as accurate as most mass-market GPS units.

Agreed. what awndray is talking about is Google Maps under iPhone. Still works very good, pretty up to date, I use it alot.

So, is there a decent app that already exists?

I still think the one at SpeedMerchants is pretty cool. Kinda pricey though.

I got navigon for turn-by-turn when it was on sale, it's actually pretty awesome and has free map updates.... but ya, there's a lot of lap timers that exist if you look hard enough.

Does Harry's do track mapping, log your data, (i.e. speed, g-force, etc at any point on the track) and split times too?

I suggest a dock for you iPhone/iPod. As the gps isn't sting enough for the lap timer. Harry also does video recording with data overlay with the iPhone 3GS or 4.
