Ecclestone confirms Chase Carey has replaced him as CEO of F1 (http://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/ecclestone-confirms-chase-carey-has-replaced-him-as-ceo-of-f1-868019/)

Bernie Ecclestone has revealed that he has lost his position as the CEO of the Formula 1 Group, and has been replaced by Liberty Media's Chase Carey.Ecclestone, 86, says he has been offered the title of 'Honorary President', but has acknowledged that he doesn’t know exactly what his role will be.It’s understood the change will be formally announced on Tuesday, along with the appointments of Ross Brawn and former ESPN man Sean Bratches, who will take up newly created sporting and commercial roles respectively.“I was deposed today,” Ecclestone told Auto Motor und Sport. “I am simply gone. It's official. I am no longer the leader of the company. My position has been taken by Chase Carey.“My new position is one of those American terms. It's something like an honorary president. I have this title now, even though I don't know what it means.”Asked about his future, he said: “My days in the office will be getting quieter now. Maybe I will attend a Grand Prix sometime in the future."I still have many friends in Formula 1, and I still have enough money to afford to attend a race.”Ecclestone added that he doesn’t expect to retain his seat on the FIA World Motor Sport Council.“I doubt it," he said when asked if he would remain involved. "First of all, I have to talk to [FIA President] Jean Todt about this.”It’s believed that Donald McKenzie, boss of erstwhile majority shareholders CVC, was keen to keep Ecclestone in a more hands-on role. However, he was overruled by Liberty Media, which is now on the brink of concluding its F1 takeover.

Have seen a few articles lately from Alonso stating that he's not concerned about the engine for 2017, but the bigger question is if the aero will be good enough.

From the driver that was proclaiming "GP2 GP2!!" I think that means he must know something concrete. I'm sure Honda has been working on the new powerplant for most of 2016 after their embarrassing 2015 season.
Also, I think McLaren has always been strong for aero and chassis. They were touted as having a great chassis over the last 2 years despite the power unit level being way down.

Thoughts?

Will Merc run away with it?
Who do you see coming into the fold?
Will McLaren get back to their rightful grid spots?
Will Red Bull be able to be even closer to Mercedes?

Fernando Alonso believes they will be able to fight Mercedes in 2017
Fernando Alonso believes that with the change of rules of 2017 the Honda engine can be compared to Mercedes, although he has doubts about the aerodynamics . The interpretation of the new rules is crucial for a team to stand out among the others, and for that we will have to wait for the Barcelona tests.

Fernando is aware that the engine of his new car will be fairly even with the Mercedes engine , although the biggest question is how it will develop aerodynamics in each team.
"The Mercedes engine, the best, is going to be difficult for everyone, but I think we can be close enough , we will be able to fight. I am 100% sure that we will reach the power we want, in aerodynamics I think it is more a question, "says Alonso. Like everyone believes, Fernando Alonso believes that everything will be mixed in 2017, which can help the show. We all want to start the Formula 1 season, especially the drivers, to see what this 2017 is about.
"Changing rules will mix things up. Honda's progress is very positive and gives me confidence for 2017. I look forward to being in Australia in March, " concludes Fernando.

Honda admits new F1 engine concept "very high-risk" (http://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/honda-admits-new-f1-engine-concept-very-high-risk-873576/)

Honda chief Yusuke Hasegawa admits the Japanese manufacturer is taking a "very high risk" with the new concept for its 2017 Formula 1 engine.

After a miserable return to F1 with McLaren (http://motorsport.com/team/mclaren) in 2015, Honda made gains last term but remained adrift of rival manufacturers Mercedes, Ferrari (http://motorsport.com/team/ferrari) and Renault.
McLaren (http://motorsport.com/team/mclaren) technical director Tim Goss said earlier this month that Honda had completed a redesign of its power unit, aided by the abolition of the token system.
As Honda bids to close that gap still further, Hasegawa says the Japanese manufacturer is taking a risk with its next-generation unit.

"The concept is completely different," Hasegawa told Motorsport.com's sister publication Autosport. "It's very high-risk, we don't know a lot of things about that new concept.
"We know it will give us a performance advantage but the biggest risk is whether we can realise that potential this year."
The unit is set to feature a revised architecture and a new layout in a bid to improve performance and packaging based on lessons learned from the past two seasons.
Hasegawa said the internal combustion engine remains a key focus for Honda but development of other areas of the power unit is required in tandem to make progress.
"We need to concentrate on the ICE for this year," he said. "If we improve the engine itself, which means boosting exhaust gas energy, we need to boost the turbine otherwise we cannot perform at the same level in terms of deployment.
"We still have to do some tests and there will be some trial and error. I hope we have understood the direction and the elements to focus on.
"But it's not easy to combine the elements to realise the improvements on the ICE completely."

What is surprising is what the lower tier drivers make. I.e your still an F1 driver, but make $150K/year? (Wehrlein)

or this statement: "Vandoorne has a one-year deal with McLaren, and currently makes $39.7 million less than his teammate. ($300K)

I'm sure some of these drivers could make more in other series, but because F1.

DRIVETRIBE's resident psychic peers into a crystal ball (ok - the bottom of a pint glass) to see what might happen in F1 in 2017...

FEBRUARY

All ten teams start testing in Barcelona. There are immediately claims that Mercedes are sandbagging as they are only 3 seconds a lap quicker than everybody else. Complaints about their trick suspension are soon dropped as all the other team bosses realise it could be made of granite and they'd still win.
Ferrari are disappointingly slow and promptly announce that 2017 will be a 'transition year' as they look to aim for wins and maybe the title in 2018. Or 2019.
Max Verstappen wins 'Test Driver of the Day' on all four days of the test, despite only driving on two of them.

MARCH
In the second Barcelona test, Lewis Hamilton goes so fast, he accidentally qualifies on pole for the Australian Grand Prix.
McLaren are the surprise package though, with for once, a fairly quick and very orange car. Team boss, Zak Brown says once again, that they won't win a race this year.

In Melbourne itself, Lewis leads a crushing 1-2 for the Brackley team, lapping both Sauber drivers by the end of lap 1, all the other drivers by lap 20 and then himself on lap 50.
Max Verstappen wins Driver of the Day.

APRIL
Cleverly scheduled to get some of the most unpopular races out of the way early on, F1 visits China, Bahrain and Russia. To save wasting everybody's time, the FIA give Max Verstappen the Driver of the Day prize ahead of all three races, before quietly binning the idea altogether.
In Shanghai, Mercedes win again but a revitalised Felipe Massa takes a storming second place. Lance Stroll asks him to retire again.

At the annual yawnfest that is the Bahrain Grand Prix, all cars finish in the exact same position they started in, after yet another Sakhir procession. Chase Carey asks for a refund.
At Sochi, Bernie Ecclestone makes his first appearance at a Grand Prix this year to see his old pal Vladimir Putin. Coincidentally, there is a mix up at immigration, which sees Carey ending up somewhere in Siberia for the weekend.
Valtteri Bottas wins his first Grand Prix after outperforming his teammate all weekend. In the podium room, Lewis playfully tosses a Pirelli cap, wrapped around a brick, at his teammate.
Meanwhile, Sauber finish the Australian Grand Prix.

MAY
The Spanish Grand Prix, and relief for fans and TV viewers the world over, as the Mercedes pair take each other out on lap one and Max Verstappen storms to a hugely popular win. Oh damn, sorry, that was last year. However, it looks at last like the other teams are catching up, as while Mercedes still win of course, Red Bull and Ferrari are only a lap behind at the flag.
In Monaco, Ferrari joy at Kimi Raikkonen's shock win is tempered as they realise they turned up a week early and did the Historic Grand Prix in error. Still, a win is a win.

In the race itself, McLaren continue to impress with strong points finishes behind Lewis, who still wins, despite stopping for longer than planned at his second pit-stop for a chat and a selfie with Justin Bieber and a Kardashian. (One of the vacuous American ones as opposed to the ones out of Star Trek).

JUNE
In Canada, local boy Lance Stroll, hugely impresses with a podium, so to celebrate, his father buys Montreal for him.
McLaren, still resurgent, bag yet more points. Zak Brown says the team won't win a race this year.
Up next, the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, (no longer called the European Grand Prix after officials realised it wasn't actually in Europe) where the organisers promised a more exciting race than last year's affair and to this end manage to persuade the FIA that it would be good for all concerned if Mercedes were to start the race in neighbouring Iran. A subsequent delay at border control for Hamilton and Bottas opens up the race nicely.
Finally, a thrilled Fernando Alonso bags a McLaren win, their first since Brazil 2012. At home, Ron Dennis puts his foot through the TV screen when Zak comes on, saying he didn't expect to win a race this year.

- To find out what happens in the second half of the season, tune in again on Monday -

Mercedes has made an ‘unprecedented step’ with its 2017 Formula 1 engine, one of its customer teams has revealed, in a move that could have dramatic implications for the title fight.

Mercedes has made "unprecedented" step with 2017 F1 engine (https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/mercedes-has-made-unprecedented-step-with-2017-f1-engine-876216/)

They do, and are testing it later today apparently.

https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/mercedes-undecided-on-full-shark-fin-after-testing-t-wing-876436

Mercedes says it is undecided about whether or not it will adopt a full shark fin on the engine cover of its 2017 Formula 1 car, after trialling a radical raised T-wing at Silverstone on Thursday.

44738

The Brackley-based outfit caused a stir at the launch of its W08 when its new challenger was fitted with a high T-wing in front of the rear wing for its afternoon running.
The concept is very different from the solutions adopted by other teams, who have all so far opted for a more standard shark fin to help channel airflow over the rear wing.
When asked by Motorsport.com about its plans for the new car, engineering director Aldo Costa said the T-wing was one idea being looked at, but that a normal shark fin would also be evaluated during Barcelona testing.

"We have seen many pictures of other cars, but from now until the first race we will have a continuous programme of evolution," he said.
"As you have seen, the launch spec was without the little T-wing, and then we tested it – and then we will carry on in Barcelona day by day testing different configurations. We will have as well a longer tail configuration to be tested in combination with new rear wings for Melbourne."

F1 teams have widely spoken about an aggressive aero development race in the early stages of the season, and Costa revealed that the Mercedes would likely have all-new wings by the time of the season-opening grand prix in Australia.
"The car in essence from now until Melbourne will change all the aerodynamic surface," he said.

People are going to hate Stroll because of his uber rich, silver-spoon-in-mouth background. They're going to hate him because, like Maldonado, he essentially bought his way into the Williams team despite Claire Williams' protests to the contrary. That is where the similarity stops with Maldonado. Anyone who has followed Stroll's career would know that he is blindingly fast, and while a raw talent, he *is* a talent. Full stop. Unlike Maldonado. I'm really looking forward to this season. I think Stroll will surprise some people. And why not support him anyway? He *is* Canadian. Wouldn't hurt to wave the flag a bit?

Haters gonna hate.

fact is...he is there because of money.
I have met a lot of great young drivers in the F-vee series and a few more in the F-1600...crazy, talented and natural drivers.
Damn...a few from karting, have never driven a manual shift car before, give them a couple laps...and they are on pole.
Where are these guys now? They realized their families could only support them for so long...giving up weekends, any spare $$ to help their kid along.
My teammate was one of these...father worked nightshift at the Honda Plant in Barrie, mother was a plumbing sales rep...salt of the earth people.
Never had a bad thing to say about others, and actually made race weekends a ton of fun.
He raced against Stroll in karts at the Nationals...they showed up with a borrowed plumbers trailer towed by a decades old SUV. Stroll was kitted out like a F1 team.
Andrew actually beat him in the rain in practice on his own track...and Stroll threw a fit and filed a protest for a suspected illegal motor. Of course it was fine. He was just a more talented driver.
So you can imagine...there a lot of drivers who went up against Stroll...but lost a money game.
No doubt he is a good driver, but the cash certainly put him where he is now.
I'd like to see him do well...and represent Canada...but there are a lot of folks in the racing scene with bitter boots about him.

Fernando Alonso has pinned the blame for McLaren's 2017 trouble on Honda – saying its new Formula 1 engine has no power and no reliability.

F1 2017: Alonso says Honda has no power and no reliability (https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/alonso-honda-has-no-power-and-no-reliability-880808/)

Amid ongoing problems for the Woking-based team, the Spaniard did not hold back on Wednesday in pointing out who shouldered the responsibility for McLaren's (https://motorsport.com/team/mclaren) difficult situation.
"I don't think we are too far back in terms of chassis side," he said, when asked to assess McLaren's (https://motorsport.com/team/mclaren) position. "We have only one problem: that is the power unit.
"There is no reliability and there is no power. We are 30km/h down on the straight, every straight.
"So when you are 30km/h down on every straight it is difficult to have a feeling on the car. Everything feels good, but when you arrive to normal speed you don't know what is going to happen."
Immediate reaction

Alonso believes Honda's situation was not as bad as its troublesome first year back in 2015, but he also said it was not good enough after the optimism of the winter.
"I think it is similar to last year to be honest," he said. "In 2015, probably we were even [further] behind than now.
"Probably this year is a bit more frustrating because the change of regulations and things like that, you have higher hopes when you think you can close that gap over the winter.
"Definitely we need to improve and we must improve. The situation is far from ideal. We are a big team. McLaren (https://motorsport.com/team/mclaren) has been dominating the sport for many years and fighting for the championship for many years.
"When you think about McLaren (https://motorsport.com/team/mclaren), when you see a McLaren (https://motorsport.com/team/mclaren), you are afraid of them when you are an opponent because you know McLaren (https://motorsport.com/team/mclaren)

"We need a reaction from everyone. We need to stay united, working close to each other. But definitely a big reaction that I expect from the team immediately." Amateur problems

Alonso said that his biggest concern was what progress could be made in finding power from the engine, rather than reliability.

He also said the oil tank design issue that Honda suffered on the opening day of testing was not something that should have happened.
"The oil tank was quite an amateur problem we had that day," he said. "From day one we keep unlocking a little bit the situation in terms of power and in terms of reliability.
"When you do more laps you discover other things. Temperature in the rear caliper or whatever, bodywork that is not properly tight.
"Things you normally discover on day or day two in winter testing. We do 40 laps every day, so we are like in day two of testing for everyone else.
"We are discovering those little things. There is nothing to worry for Australia I guess. We'll be fully ready to compete in a good level, the only question mark is how much power we will have."

When asked whether he was able to take Barcelona's Turn 3 flat out, Alonso also made a joke about the lack of performance.

"Oh yeah, for us, not only Turn 3," he smiled. "For us nearly all the corners are flat."

Ouch!

Mercedes, Red Bull forced to change suspensions

Mercedes and Red Bull Racing were reportedly forced to change their suspension systems ahead of the Australian GP as they did not comply with the regulations.

Formula 1’s suspension systems were one of the hot topics in this year’s pre-season after Ferrari asked the FIA for clarification regarding trick suspensions.

Motorsport’s governing body declared that the pre-loaded systems were illegal and launched checks into all the teams’ cars during pre-season testing in Spain.
According to reports Red Bull Racing and Mercedes were forced to modify their designs.

FIA race director Charlie Whiting explained the rules governing the suspension systems.
“You are not allowed to have a suspension system that affects the aero performance of the car in anything other than an incidental way,” he said in Melbourne on Thursday.
“We don’t allow it. That is the approach we are taking.
“We wanted to see whether the suspension is generally suspension or if it is there predominantly for the aerodynamic performance of the car. That is the change. We have been focusing far more on that this year.

“If a suspension system behaves asymmetrically, then there is not a very justifiable reason for behaving like that. So if a suspension system goes down at one speed and comes back at a different speed then really there shouldn’t be any reason for that.
“If they are not able to convince us of that then they are not able to use it.”

McLaren experienced a pitiable pre-season as their Honda engine was both unreliable and slow.
That meant the Woking team covered less laps than they did in the build-up to 2016, and they were slowest of all excluding Sauber, who are running year-old engines.
This has led to reports that McLaren have approached Mercedes to enquire about a possible engine deal for 2018.

Alonso, though, is refusing to comment on the matter.
“That’s a question for the team,” the Spaniard told Sky F1.
“Obviously, I know and I’m aware about some speculation and some things that went out [in the press], but I will not enter [the discussion] too much.
“I will just drive at my best and hopefully the team can answer that question tomorrow.”

As for whether a move to a more competitive engine would be convince the double World Champion to stay at McLaren beyond 2017, he replied: “I don’t know.”

Well, the new cars are 5 secs faster, so that's not too bad. Don't know what my laptimes are like on F1-2016 but will have to give it a go again this weekend.

Interesting Qualy.

Figured Ferrari would show their real pace, but so did Mercedes and Hamilton. Bottas did great in his first Qualy and stayed close enough.

So it could be over after the first corner as some predict (Verstappen) but hoping for some good passing and some real dicing during the race between the Ferraris and Nercs.

Some surprises, with Renault so far back, and great effort for Grosjean putting his Haas up in 6th.

An uncommon crash for Danny Ric and RedBulls not fast enough for podiums.

Alonso did all he could with the McLaren for 13th, while Vandoorne having issues and failing to put in a decent lap so he'll start 18th.

Strolldonado crashed out again as well as Palmer, so they'll be on the back row.

Can't wait for the race now!

Yeah, obviously the kid can drive. He has won at every level he's competed at thus far.

He's won because he's got the best (unlimited) resources backing him. Throw that cash at any of the other F3 drivers they'd probably have a championship also.
Take a billionaire's kid and train them for any other pro sport with the same resources and it's highly unlikely they'd become the top 20 in the world, even if they train 24/7.

Sure the money helps, but you've still got to drive the car.

But by showing that anyone with enough money can compete at the highest level takes away from the credibility of the amount of "talent" required.
Life's not a level playing field. This just rubs it in your face a little bit more...

And I guarantee any of us would jump at the opportunity to do what hes been able to do if someone else was footing the bill right?

Absolutely, it's not the kids fault, we'd probably all do the same.
But it takes away from the narrative that these are the best drivers in the world.
You don't want F1 to end up like Indy car where half the field doesn't deserve to be out there, but they bought a ticket.

Good race, nice to see competition at the front for a change.

Not a huge fan of Vettel's but still better than Hammy or Merc's dominance. Plus, we'll have a championship showdown during the season.

Notes:
Alonso in the points, almost.
Perez doing well in the pink car.
Bottas showing Hammy he can keep up, although I was hoping he would get close and pass/challenge Hamilton.
Giovinazzi did better in the Sauber than Stroll in the Williams.
Feel heartbroken for Ricciardo, lots of problems in his home race.

Yes, not much on track passing other than the backmarkers. I love the way the new cars look, but passing is reduced. Another brilliant idea by F1.

So much for 5 seconds a lap faster.
Qualy was quicker by only 1.7 secs and fastest race lap was a 1:26.538 vs last year's 1:28.997.

Although grip & cornering speeds are much higher and horsepower is up from last year, there is a top speed reduction due to drag.

We got lucky on lap 14 & 15 to witness Stroll trying to pass a Sauber. You could really feel the the young guy's struggle when the view was from the cockpit. I can only imagine how stressful it must be driving these new F1. Hamilton said it's not a good year to start in f1. These cars are really difficult to drive. The problem or what the drivers are saying is with all this new grip, when it goes, it goes. There's no catching it, or it's almost impossible

March 26th, 2017, 06:10pm
Funny that you say that. I saw lots of drifting going on. Like only <=5 degress of slip angle, but powersliding none the less. Why would you risk losing the aero if it was so hard to recover?

Mario
March 26th, 2017, 11:18pm
I heard from the tv commentator in long fast corners. Like it happened to Riccardo and Stroll prior to the race. Why would they risk losing aero grip? To better their pole position. Better lap time. Not be caught. Etc.

Love seeing a non-merc up front! Really hope Ferrari can keep that pace all year and Merc doesn't find more pace...oh and redbull/renault get their shit together so they can keep up. Seems like Max was able to keep up with the Ferrari so that's a good sign.

Great to see Ferrari take a win and put pressure on Merc.

Bummed that the wider cars and more aero seem to have made overtaking hard again. Not sure why didn't just move to grippier, more durable tires to increase lap times.

Great read, talks about the real issues and how they could sort them out.

What next for McLaren-Honda?

While expressing the need for improvement, Alonso was mostly sanguine about the situation in his public appearances over the course of the weekend. But there were still glimpses behind the mask.

He sat stony faced in the team's post-qualifying news conference, until the question of how he motivated himself to go through another season like this was brought up.

Where's your head at, he was asked?
"I expect a big change in the team, a big reaction," he said. "We will not be 13th all season. Or I will not be."

The message was clear. Sort it out, or I'm off.

Probably a number of little things.

Last year in MTL Hammy blew the cutout before the main straight very near the end of qualifying, and the announcers were all "oh, too bad, that was quick", but he wasn't really on pace that lap... the next lap, he was entering the straight with extra speed and he did have a PB 1st sector, and was looking like a new lap record when he lost another corner. It was so late in qual that no one else had a chance to pull the same move, and it wasn't mentioned as nothing came of it, but I'm pretty sure he was after a cheater lap to set another lap record.

Nice to see a different race for once.
BUT...Australia has never been a good representation of what will go down the rest of the year. We should consider it a pre-season test session.

That being said...I think we'll see the same pattern over and over...Merc has the speed to be on pole., Ferrari will outsmart them in pit/traffic/safety car strategy.
When Vettel is in front, he doesn't make many mistakes and is impossible to pass. The Merc doesn't seem to like being in traffic.

So if Alonso walks...who would snap him up?

race pace you need to deal with fuel load, tire wear, track conditions, change in weather, fuel mapping and power delivery, dirty air effecting tires, temps, etc.. so many variables.

quali, you have what it takes to get your fastest lap.

my kind of racing; fastest lap for as many laps as you can

Oh yes, I agree they can't do quali times but at the end of the race if the track is good and fuel is low, we've seen some drivers go in for fresh tires to do purple times.

Should they add things like refueling and no engine amount limits?

Taking away the number of engines available per year would have skyrocketing costs, and then there'd be fewer teams on the grid. Like 3, Merc, Ferrari and maybe RB, everybody else is having financial troubles as it is, unless the monetary award totals are overhauled as they should be.

And that was proper racing.
I'm thinking that the drs is now operating near perfect. Not vtec light speed like the last few seasons, but gets them close enough that they can battle in the upcoming braking zones, instead of a meaningless pass at the end of the straight.

Vettel/Ricciardo/Max/Sainz/Alo all pulled off some sweet moves.

Lewis and Vettel were trading fastest laps for the last 10 laps. Nice to see them push until the end. If the Vettel had not pitted on the VSC it would have been an epic fight.
