According to reports in Spain, the 2016 McLaren-Honda will be boosted by 223 extra horsepower this season after the Japanese engine manufacturers found a breakthrough solution to their 2015-long ERS flaw.†

According to Spanish publication As, 'the new Honda will have 223 horsepower more than that of 2015. Last year the combustion engine had about 70 horsepower less than that of Mercedes and also had to make up 163 horsepower from the energy recovery system (ERS) which could barely be released, unlike the other cars, on the straights for 33 seconds per lap.

'In Sakura, the Honda factory in Japan, they have been working 24-hour shifts Ė and didnít take Christmas holidays - to solve the problem and, in summarized and basic terms, they have increased turbo by sacrificing other parts of the power unit that have minimal impact and by relocating the ERS cooling system.'

Allegedly, the stunt organizers needed approval for driving of vehicles on the slopes outside the normal routes or fenced areas because of the potential to cause damage to natural state of the area. The fines could top 30,000 euros (approximately $32,450).lol

Fire is not as much of an issue as it once was. Plus being in a canopy may protect you from the fire, until it can be extinguished.
I believe the main issue for not going with the canopy is because of vision distortion. The fighter jets are a lot bigger canopies than your think

Well...

There is already Lemans, Prototype and other series.

It's becoming a discussion of "do you want F1 to be at the top of the motorsports racing chain" or you want F1 to be "top of the open wheel/open cockpit" chain.

2 different things here.

Chances of surviving a crash was greater without belts back then, they had belts but wouldn't wear them.

I'd like them to keep it open wheel open cockpit but not sure FIA is going to stay like this.

Mario
January 26th, 2016, 08:28pm
I personally think we should just move with the times. You start with karts where everything is open and no suspension, you move to GT cars where everything is closed and has aero and suspension, then go to open wheels with no aero, to open wheels with full aero, to covered wheels with full aero, to full aero, covered wheels and close cockpits.

That way it becomes legitimate, because it's part of a learning process to go faster and faster. Just as long as it is really faster and more exciting to watch, then I'll be ok with it. And by exciting, I'm not talking about NASCAR crashing exciting, I'm talking about skills and their ability to take G forces. I welcome those 'speed racers' concept cars. F1 should definetly move with the times. There are way to many traditionalist in Motorsports.

A lot of f1 drivers have never been in GT cars, they stay with formula ford/F3000/GP2 ect. Open wheel cars and GT cars are worlds apart. (No personal knowledge, but just finished Mark Webbers book where he goes into a lot of detail about how hard it is to go between the 2 types)

Bernie Ecclestone has slammed Formula 1 as predictable and has called for FIA president Jean Todt to hand over control of the sport.

luker
February 22nd, 2016, 04:19pm
I don't know of anyone that has said F1 was innovative and unpredictable for at least a decade. This has nothing to do with Jean Todt so much as things that started happening under Ecclestone's management either.

I paid to to "watch" a race in Montreal years ago and it was terrible, we saw more at the bar we went to mid race on TV than actually on the island. Grand-am/Roles/Nationwide was ten times more people friendly and awesome as an experience. Way more.

Testing underway, Day 2 now.

The good:

Ferrari is fast
McLaren has tons of laps in so far, almost 200 already?
Mercedes seems to be right up there as usual
Red Bull is pretty fast also
Force India also running good pace
Williams up there as usual
Hopefully will be closer up front, not a Mercedes runaway

The Bad

Haas with minimal laps, yesterday front wing failure
Renault with reliability problems (but no Maldonado so no crashes!)

Yeah, can't really tell who's pushing although the Ferrari seems to be setting fast(er) times, could be everyone else taking it easier.

I'm sure McLaren are not running in Quali trim, although reports suggest they found a few hundred hp over the winter, significant.

Either way, would be nice to see a 4-5 way battle for podiums from the big guns (Merc, Ferrari, Red Bull, Williams, McLaren)

Former Formula 1 driver Robert Kubica will make his circuit racing return in March's 12 Hours of Mugello. Kubica, who has spent recent years on the rallying scene, will run alongside fellow WRC driver Martin Prokop in the #777 Mercedes-Benz SLS GT3, entered by MP-Sports.
The race will mark the Polish star's comeback to track racing after a heavy crash in an Italian rally ended his F1 career back in 2011.
Since then, Kubica, the winner of the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix and the 2013 WRC2 champion, had been linked to potential opportunities in the DTM and WTCC - albeit none materialising.
He has no full-time seat in WRC 2016, having entered only the season opener in Monte Carlo, from which he retired.
In the upcoming race, Kubica will be joining Czech rally driver Prokop, who has been a WRC regular since 2005 and won the JWRC title in 2009.
The Mugello 12 Hours, which takes place on March 18-19, is the second round of the Creventic-run 24H Series, which was recognised as an official FIA championship in 2015.
The season-opening Dubai 24 Hours race was won by Audi drivers Laurens Vanthoor, Stuard Leonard, Michael Meadows and Alain Ferte.

It's usually very small top 2-3 teams for each win as they have to race at 7 events for season. For limiting the budget.

TSN enters F1 partnership with Sky Sports

TSN has announced a new partnership with Sky Sports that provides Canadian viewers with Sky Sports' award-winning broadcast coverage of the FIA Formula One World Championship.
As part of the new partnership, TSN will deliver expanded pre-race and post-race coverage for all 21 races on the F1 calendar – added on top of the network's existing practice and qualifying coverage. All season long, fans will have access to the following new content:

- Lead-in Coverage – TSN builds the buzz in the lead up to each Grand Prix race, with expanded coverage of qualifying, plus all-new pre-race coverage from Sky Sports featuring a track parade, driver interviews, and the rest of the action from the pit lane
- Race Coverage – TSN’s race-day coverage now features commentary and analysis from Sky Sports’ renowned broadcast team.

- Post-Race Coverage – TSN’s post-race coverage from Sky Sports now includes podium celebrations, instant reaction from the track, detailed analysis of the race, and more

TSN’s expanded F1 coverage begins this weekend with the Australian Grand Prix (visit our complete F1 broadcast schedule (http://www.tsn.ca/2016-formula-one-racing-on-tsn-1.431562)). The action gets underway with practice on Friday at 1:30 a.m. ET on TSN2, followed by qualifying on Saturday at 2 a.m. ET on TSN5.

Race-day coverage begins Saturday at 11:30 p.m. ET on TSN5.

“Canadian F1 fans are among the most passionate fan bases out there, and we look forward to bringing them Sky Sports’ world-class F1 coverage and commentary,” said Shawn Redmond, Vice-President of Programming, TSN. “This is another example of how we continue to leverage our five national feeds. By adding even more content to our growing lineup of championship events, we are better serving our fans and bringing tremendous value to our subscribers.”

Broadcast Team

The new partnership also brings Canadian F1 fans commentary from Sky Sports’ acclaimed broadcast team, led by commentators Martin Brundle and David Croft, with expert analysis from former World Champion Damon Hill alongside Anthony Davidson and Johnny Herbert. Coverage is fronted by host Simon Lazenby and features reporters Ted Kravitz, Natalie Pinkham, and Rachel Brookes.

In addition, Sky Sports recently added Williams’ newly announced reserve driver Paul Di Resta to their team. The Scottish driver, who will serve as a back-up for Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa this season, will provide expert analysis for a number of races.

F1 on TSN
As part of the network’s complete coverage of every F1 race throughout the 2016 season, TSN delivers exclusive live coverage of the only Canadian race on the F1 calendar: the CANADIAN GRAND PRIX – the most-watched motorsport event on Canadian soil.
In 2014, TSN and RDS reached a new media rights extension with the Formula One Group through to 2019, allowing the networks to maintain complete Canadian exclusivity of the entire FIA Formula One World Championship.

It would be interesting to see the G-force data from that crash. It looked spectacular, and the car is destroyed, but it doesn't look like there was a huge impact at all. Lots of small impacts, and it took a long (relative) time to scrub off all the speed. If you look close, the car is already missing 3 wheels and most of the bodywork before it even makes the gravel trap.

Kinda reminds me of a sprintcar flip. They look crazy, but they never really hit anything hard.

Interesting race strategy synopsis...the Haas result was carefully considered.

The eye opener was Haas' decision to gamble on a red flag

"Interestingly, when the Safety Car was deployed initially for Alonsoís accident with the other Haas driver Gutierrez, the Haas team did not prepare in the pit lane for Grosjean, indicating that the teamís strategist Ruth Buscombe was reasoning that the accident was severe enough to warrant a red flag. Others pitted, including Bottas for Williams. But she was right. When the red flag came out, Grosjean effectively got a free pit stop."

Hass has hired Ruth Buscombe from Ferrari as their strategist.

Funny, if you saw the sky coverage. Ted tried to interview Ruth and Ruth just said "I'm a strategist I don't do interviews" and took off.

But his comment was it seems like the best call of the race was them doing nothing. There was no indication at the time that she made the call that there might be a red, more that she did nothing and lucked into it. Maybe she's smarter than they thought.

Certainly she would have chosen medium tires for Vettel if she was at Ferrari ... right?

It would have some sort of latch, release mechanism. But yeah, upside down

petawawarace
March 23rd, 2016, 06:01pm
I think it may have hindered him getting out for sure, but even had he been trapped in the car upside down, the safety crew is there so quickly they could have helped him out very quickly. They have reduced the risk of fire so greatly now, that's not as much of a concern as impacts to the head.
Im sure that if you look back at all the accidents in the last 10-15 years, very few would have been hindered by a canopy of some sort, and if they had been, like Alonso's, the consequence would have been very little.

Agreed. Same argument that people who don't use seatbelts use: If I need to get out quickly, this lifesaving tech is going to hinder me. If this was an LMS car, no one would say that you should get rid of all the bodywork because it makes extrication more difficult. Red Bull's design looks fighter jet cool btw.

One Problem is tires. Guys in P2 don't want to push too much and fight for P1 because they can pick whatever tires they want to start the race. P1 are stuck with whatever they used in P1. Also in P1, they won't go for another 2 laps and risk damaging the tires they have to start the race with. Tire regulations is one of the many problems with this format but tomorrow morning they're going to vote to change it.

Alo is the king of social media these days.

https://youtu.be/3lAIx6MrePw

Before FP3 began on Saturday, Herbert, a former race winner with Benetton and Stewart, was speaking on Sky Sports' coverage when he was approached by double world champion Alonso, who was clearly annoyed by the Brit's comments.

"I will not retire, mate," Alonso said while shaking Herbert's hand. "I was world champion. You ended up as a commentator because you were not a world champion mate."

Alonso then walked off camera, leaving a bemused Herbert to say: "Thanks very much, no, that's good. I wasn't world champion ... Happy man."
The moment was inevitably picked up on by fans and soon shared on social media before and during FP3.

Lewis ruined Lewis' race by having a bad start. Again.

Bottas could of cut the corner, I know he came in hot and Lewis should of left him space but someone going hot like this should be prepared to cut the corner imo

The curbs aren't killer there, minimal if any damage, I would of cut the corner either way lol

True. And good to see Lewis has a fluffer.

lewis left the door opened when he went wide. look like he was trying to keep his momentum and he got burnt as nico protected the line and lewis had to apply more brakes than expected. lewis couldn't move over to protect the inside and bottas took a big leap in.... and it was too much.

Kimi kept it clean and made some masterful passes...he's my driver of the day.

You can't go wide like that at turn 1 of a race and not except someone to show up! It's racing! I don't agree with the officials on that one

they could have gave him a 5sec penalty vs a drive through. I really like bottas when he first come on but last year or so... it's not he's progressing anymore.

kimi had good drive and for once he wasn't unlucky.

I might of called it a racing incident, When watching the replay I think both had a part to play but if someone had to take a penalty, then yes Bottas, but not a drive through.

The smartest one in this incident was Rosberg, he knew what he was doing.

true. I think he tried and was fighting some oversteering, he turned left to save it and then lewis helped. :)

I think part of it was nico slowing down more than he needed too. Even Lewis was avoiding him.
