Would just be Alonso's luck that he wiggles out of the McLaren contract, gets the Merc seat only to find Merc in the mid-field next year

Can just imagine all the drivers who recently signed contracts/extensions who are kicking themselves right now. (i.e. Hulkenberg, Perez, Sainz, etc)

Just thinking.
RBR 100% want Max for the long term. Only way to do that is to get rid of Ricciardo....

If Seb goes to Mercedes then I can see Ricciardo to Ferrari.
Or Ricciardo to Merc ???

With the rule changes, I'm guessing Merc will get a 1 year deal with someone. If this was last year, they would want an experienced good driver like RIC.

Is Newey coming back to Red Bull? If so, pretty sure Max and DannyRic are staying there.

Alo is a smart guy and wouldn't get stuck in a team if other options are available.

But Vettel should also have out clauses as well as Ferrari.

Would suck to have ALO move and see Mercedes lag behind while McLaren move to the top. Anything can happen next year with the reg and car changes.

If he doesn't want to race, he's not going to be competitive. If a driver isn't ready to give it all they have, they should not be racing.

I understand how this season sucked the fun of racing right out of him. That feeling obviously didn't start this year. It was a long process. He gave it everything he had. Clearly he doesn't want to do that again. He had to quit.

I just read that Toto has 2 drivers line up to replace him. He hopes Mercedes will make a decision fast.

I listened to a video of him (Toto) this morning on FB. He was obviously talking to McLaren, because he knows inside out Alonso's contract. Never once did he denied to the journalist that they were not trying to get Alonso. He clearly stated he wants 2 #1 drivers and that his first choice is not to support a rookie driver

Sounds like they'll go with Wehrlein to me. Alonso would be the "safe" call. I guess we'll hear soon.

http://www.skysports.com/f1/news/12433/10686368/mercedes-ready-to-make-brave-decision-on-nico-rosbergs-replacement-says-toto-wolff

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff insists the world champions are ready to make a "brave decision" when picking Nico Rosberg's replacement.
And the Austrian has heaped praise on reserve driver Pascal Wehrlein and Williams' Valtteri Bottas, the current favourites for the role.
The Silver Arrows hope to confirm Lewis Hamilton's new team-mate before Christmas after Rosberg's sudden retirement left a "very big gap", as Wolff told Sky Sports F1: "Clearly, with Nico taking the decision quite late we are in a bit of a compromised situation because if we had known three months ago there were more options available.

'Merc need best two drivers'

"Maybe we need to make a brave decision in the same way Nico has made a brave decision."
The "brave decision" referred to would appear to be promoting 22-year-old Wehrlein despite his lack of experience with Wolff adamant Mercedes will "respect contractual relationships" in their search.
"We need the quickest guy who makes the least mistakes and understands that this is a team game," added Wolff.
Wehrlein, who is without a drive for next season, graduated from Mercedes young driver programme and scored Manor's only point of the season in an encouraging first year in Formula 1.
The youngster claimed he was "ready" for the step up to the sport's most dominant seat earlier this week, with Wolff adding to Sky F1's Natalie Pinkham that "a driver needs to have that opinion".

Wehrlein is in the frame despite being overlooked for the Force India seat in favour of fellow Mercedes junior Esteban Ocon.
"Sometimes in life things turn out differently than you expected," said Wolff. "I think in terms of performance, both have had great races in the past, had solid performances with Manor, and they deserve a future in Formula 1.
"Therefore I consider both of them as future stars."

Wolff: Mercedes 'considering' Alonso
(http://www.skysports.com/f1/news/12433/10685109/mercedes-considering-fernando-alonso-to-replace-nico-rosberg)

But then there is Bottas, who was managed by Wolff long before his F1 breakthrough with Williams four years ago. The Austrian remains part of Bottas' management stable.
Despite signing a new contract with the Grove team in November, Sky F1's Damon Hill believes a 'quid pro quo' situation could see Wehrlein and discounted Mercedes engines exchanged for the Finn.
"Besides the personal relationship, where he's a very likeable and intelligent driver, he's also somebody who is very, very fast," claimed Wolff. "But he's with Williams now, the lead driver, and is very important for the combination with Lance Stroll. Claire [Williams] and her team very much rely on him."
Wolff, who also admitted Mercedes are considering McLaren's Fernando Alonso, has outlined the qualities the team are seeking from their new driver.

"It is about out and out pace," he explained. "Mistakes are a different topic. Only on very few occasions have we seen Lewis or Nico making a mistake or colliding. More than 90 per cent of the races we've been able to score maximum points, so that is a consideration.
"Then the out and out pace in order to challenge Lewis and grow the general performance within the team. We need somebody that goes lightning fast. To combine all those three factors is what Nico has been able to do over the years.
"We will not change the philosophy. We want to have two drivers with equal opportunities that can race each other, because I think we owe that to the fans and ourselves. It's the way we want racing to happen."

Mercedes place job 'advert'

Opening up on Rosberg's unexpected departure, the Mercedes chief revealed that the German was "very emotional" when he rung him to give the news and insisted there was nothing he could have said to have changed the world champion's mind.
"He will leave a very big gap because he was not only a very fast driver, but he was able to push Lewis," said Wolff. "They pushed each other and were therefore really able to perform well and score our goals for victories. On a bad day for Lewis, Nico was able to pull out great performances and vice versa.
"His technical ability in giving us directions being part of the development work of the car, that's a part we are going to greatly miss. Whoever is going to replace Nico needs to fill those big shoes."

Regarding the empty seat at Mercedes...
I wonder how the negotiations gets started?
Is this all agents talking to the team?
Does Alonso contact Merc to say "Im interested"
Does Merc make calls to the prospects?
Its not like they need a driver that can bring $$$ in sponsors...they actually want a great driver.

All of the above. It's business. You don't get anywhere by staying silent. you get what you want by selling benefits, benefits, benefits to the interested party. Fuck, if I was a driver, I would be all over Toto Wolf. Like all the time. And get my agent, wife, kids, who ever to show him how serious I am. I would bring trailers of sponsorship cash.

Webber is not only retired from F1, but endurance racing too.

Would rather see Button unretired than Massa back in a Williams, but Massa makes the most sense since he was just with them.
Then again, 2017 will be all new cars, so no matter.

If Bottas goes to Merc, kinda like winning the F1 Lotto, he'll have to thank Rosberg.

FIA bans Mercedes concept after Ferrari letter - report

Ferrari has reportedly made a bold bid to catch up in 2017 by designing a new suspension system, or have the Mercedes-pioneered concept banned by the FIA.
Germany’s Auto Bild claims that for its 2017 car codenamed 668, Ferrari has come up with a Mercedes-like, hydraulically-networked chassis.
But before debuting it in late February, Ferrari “asked the FIA for clarification as to whether the (suspension) system is really legal”.
“If not, Mercedes would have to remove it,” said correspondent Bianca Garloff.
Ferrari is not commenting.
But the same news is being reported by Italy’s authoritative La Gazzetta dello Sport, adding that Red Bull also ran the Mercedes-like layout last year.
And the newspaper said the FIA has responded to Ferrari’s clarification request by telling the teams the Mercedes-like system is not allowed.
Correspondent Paolo Filisetti wrote: “The world championship will not begin for three months, but the technical skirmish between the top teams has already reached a high level.”
The FIA’s decision to ban the concept is reportedly because it varies the right-height of the car, not simply to act as traditional suspension but for aerodynamic effect.
