View Full Version : Hellcat Has Been Unleashed!

After a break-in period, I finally unleashed my new Charger Hellcat at Calabogie Motorsports Park , last evening.

The circuit - 5 km of very hilly, twisty, smooth asphalt is best suited to small, well handling sports cars.

So how did this powerful, heavy beast do?

Well, as one very familiar with this challenging circuit, even I was surprised. The 707 hp Charger simply ate the track!

Low speed corners, fast sweepers, threshold braking, powering out of tight corners were easy prey for the SRT's amazing electro-magnetic suspension & 8 speed transmission. I drove her hard, and she never put a wheel wrong.

And the sound . . . Well - you have to hear it for yourself. Turn up the volume!! (vid courtesy of James)

I turned it up and that wind noise nearly blew my ear drums. Then the Hellcat did.

Sounds great!

Move along - nothin' to see here.

No matter where cars are built today - the robots are the same - assembly processes same as are many of the parts -- etc. etc. I've had Euro, Asian, even British, and rented cars everywhere on my travels. The Charger was designed in the US; engine built in Mexico; various parts & electronics from all over the globe - all assembled in Brampton, Ontario.

LOL! I went through all these comments 10 years ago, when I took an 05 300C on the track up at Tremblant. The difference then was that it was HARD WORK to get the 300C around that circuit in a tidy way. The car was a SLED - and I had to toss it, to go fast - and destroyed the OEM Contis in the process.

My new Dodge is a different kind of cat! The car is the star! Any competent driver can bang out fast, smooth laps with this beast.

The truly amazing part is that is it the fastest 4 door production sedan on the planet. Period! Top speed documented at 204 mph. Yet - I bought this here in Canada for a price in the mid sixties.

I was talking to my neighbor, who is in his 60's and is an even bigger car guy than I am.
When we heard that whine we both gawked towards the noise. He waved. Hopefully we get to meet the lucky neighbor some time as we seem to know all the best cars around.

8 speed auto with choice of Triptronic; steering column Paddles; full auto mode ; 4 choices of tranny programs - or you can program your own shift program. Also a launch mode for drags.

OH yeah? That sounds fun. I read somewere that getting a manual into these things was pretty tough. Either way who cares, this sounds good.

Also has to do with manuals being abused and would explode much easier...

In those the torque converter, even if it's a very beefy unit, is still making sure the transmission does not grenade itself at every jab of the throttle.

True. You can get the 6 speed manual - (same one from the Viper). but even the SRT factory gurus recommend the 8 speed - better matched to the 650 ftlb of torque. And in track mod the 8 speed shifts faster than a human. I found this weird - when you lift off the throttle & coast, you can feel the 8 speed shifting down - but only in situations where you would want it to do that. I have no idea how this happens - but is sure handy on a road course.

Sounds like they've really improved automatics. My G37 would shift at all the wrong moments on the track... was pretty damned annoying.

Performance settings on track cars they have. Normal cars still do it all wrong. They upshift when you let off the throttle because they are set to save fuel.

But lots of performance cars now have excellent programming that downshift on braking instead of upshifting and some of them hold gears based on a g meter, so if you are in a long sweeper they don't revert and downshift or upshift.

It's pretty epic actually.

Or shift the auto like a semi auto using a shift controller. Best of both world...

I use that technique with the German Triptronic 5 speed auto on my 300C SRT8 track car. It is programmed to shift up just before redline. To downshift, I just tap the lever to the left a couple of times. Won't go into a lower gear than the redline, based on the car's speed at the time. My eyes stay on the track and my right had is only off the steering wheel for a second. Works well for me.

Tuggin' & hoonin' & bangin' those cars . . . Ugggggh!

Was up at Bogie this Wed. evening to help as an instructor at Nigel's Dream Laps.

Towards the end of the night, now that my Hellcat is through the break-in period, I gave Nigel the keys to the Cat and jumped in beside him. Big mistake! LOL! He pounded the big car around the long track, showing no respect for the corners. Scared me silly! :becky: Did a few laps - passing everything. Wish I'd grabbed a lap time. Boy can that young fellow drive!!!

And the funny part came when we pulled in. He was called up to the office - for making too much noise! On the Hellcat - the exhaust baffles open up at full throttle - straight pipes, baby!

Once I stopped shaking from being tossed around as a passenger, I couldn't stop laughing. Nigel's comment - " That car has great handling & brakes. And - I love the sound!"
