Ladies and Gentlemen, and Grant:

You heard it here first, The Calabogie GT Challenge, has partnered with 1Morelap and Calabogie Motorsports Park for the 2015 Race Season. We are expanding the program to offer not only our 5th season of the successful GT Challenge, but also offer the new for 2015 Calabogie Platinum Challenge, an Open Passing (Wheel to Wheel, ZERO CONTACT) Race series.

The Calabogie GT Challenge will be narrowed to 3 classes (GT1, 2, and 3), eliminating the current GT1, and putting a minimum lap time of 2:20 around the long track.

The Calabogie Platinum Challenge will have multiple classes, including a Chump Car Class. Mandatory Cages, and a HANS for anyone faster than 2:20 around the long track.

Come to the 2015 Driver's Meeting Lunch on Feb 15th, 2015, to learn all the details!

even though a fully caged car could compete in either series, from what I see, you don't have a full cage, so you would compete in the GT challenge, probably GT2 class based on your improving lap times.

Fuck it. I can't wait to ask. I have a roll bar not a cage, right? If a 'half-cage' counts then I'm in Platinum as long as other slow people will be there. If not, I'll stick to GT as I can't do the full cage thing this year.

having a cage doesn't mean you have to run platinum challenge. A fully caged car could run in either series.

the difference between the two series is the type of racing/passing. Safety requirements follow along.

In which case all highway travel should require this equipment? At least at Calabogie the crazy fast drivers wait for me to point them by (most of the time) and the slow drivers tell me which side to pass on and don't swerve into me when I'm going by. That's more than I can expect on the 417.

Not quite. If you have a straight on collision, it is not the bending of your neck. It is equivalent to having your head pulled straight up. Easily does damage to spinal chord, quadriplegic or death if you are lucky.

You can adjust the pads on the neck to move inward if it's too large.

karmaboy
January 28th, 2015, 10:06am
Your seating position is a big factor in deciding your head restraint system.
Folks who have more of a lay-down seat tend to prefer the Simpson. The Hans works nicely for more upright seats.
I practically lie on my back in my vee...and still use a Hans...its not optimal (I have removed the chest pads to make it work)

FWIW- I had two "nose into the tire wall" crashes...both times relatively slow. Both times my head went hard to the limits of the tethers.
The things work. In both cases they saved me a very sore neck.

The Hans design depends on the harness to keep it in place.
Others use more elaborate body harnessing in lieu of the belts.

Advisable to try before you buy to see what feels best for you.

Mike, you will want to get the ones with the Post Anchor and sliding tether. This is one that clips directly to your helmet. The quick click one is a two piece tether with clips that "quick" disconnect. And that your racing partner forgets to remove from his helmet when he gives you the HANS, or get lost in a bag somewhere.

Well - the limo's getting old - 170,000 on the odo - so, yes - we will gut the interior and cage it. Main reason is for safety. As to platinum - that's going to be determined by our lap times. I don't think mine will get much better than 2:30 unless I go to slicks. To do that, I have to get 18" wheels custom built to clear the front Brembos. We'll see what happens . . . .

funding dependent (it's looking good these days but I'm sure my wife will find SOMETHING that is a MUST HAVE for the kid lol) I plan to run the full series starting in gt to get used to the car again (didn't really get much seat time last year) and then try platinum. only proper wheel to wheel I've done was the 1st chump race at bogie. it was great but not hard cuz the cars mostly just passed me and not the other way around lol. the organizers seem willing to indulge that kind of arrangement....

If you cats are trying on helmets...
- bring a balaclava with you (i know not required...but worth it)
- sit there for 15 min. with it on.

Nothing worse than a helmet that doesn't fit and you can't wait to rip it off after a race.

Good point! I'll bring mine. Here's a helmet maintenance tip - Spray the inside with Febreze before storing away. Febreze actually has enzymes that 'eat' the odor causing bacteria . . .

Um... Details on helmet toss please...

Uh - OK. Here's a post from another forum. it is 2005, and my car is a new black 300C with the 5.7 - not the 2006 SRT8 that I have now. It's a long read:

"It took a while, but the aches and pains have all but gone away. Mind you, none of my physical discomfort was caused by the collision (more about that later).

No, my aches, pains and bruises were only down the left side of my body and were caused by the G forces slamming my shoulder, hip and thigh against the driver’s door while barreling through the right turns on this superb clockwise course.

As usual, I am getting ahead of myself. Let’s begin at the beginning.

At the start of the summer I took my 300C to the road racing circuit at Mont Tremblant, in the Laurentian mountains of Quebec. At the time, my car was stock, except for a Volant air intake. I attended a driver’s school that ran the full day, with some open lapping in the afternoon. It was a blast! This big 2 ton 4 door sedan was surprisingly balanced and it felt good to be back out on a track again.

Since then, I did some minor tweaking – removed the resonators; replaced the OEM tires with high performance 255/55/18” BFG KDW2’s. A lip spoiler was added to the rear trunk for better high speed stability. I was anxious to get back out on the track and wanted to fiddle with the ESP settings, including some runs with the infamous fuse #17 pulled.

A good friend, Guy, offered to come up with me to time the laps and grab some pics. The day promised lots of sunshine and 80 degree temps. When we headed out at 6 am, we were in morning fog that worsened as the 300C wound its way ever higher into the mountains. Despite the limited view we were assaulted by a riot of orange, yellow, red and green foliage as the forests were ablaze with October splendor.

As Guy drove the twisty Laurentian roads, I speculated on what the day would bring. The schedule was advanced lapping. 3 heats in the morning on the short track – lunch break – 3 more heats in the afternoon on the long (full) track. Everyone was supposed to be an experienced driver. I had a sense that, unlike the last visit, there would be some very quick drivers pushing their rides to the limits. I would have to stay focused at all times. As the day unfolded, my premonition was proven to be right.

We rolled into the paddock area at 8:30 am. The fog lifted to reveal a hub of activity akin to prepping for club racing:

v a Ferrari 360 Modena Spyder in Italian Racing Red – 600 miles on the odo,

v a new red vette with the 400HP LS2 engine, racing rubber

v 2 race prepared WRX STi’s; on trailers – 340 hp outputs;

v a blue Acura RXS full race prep on a trailer - dozens of decals and stickers;

v a beat up white Honda CRX; gutted; full race slicks (looked like a sleeper);

v a 1998 grey Vette, auto, stock;

v a green Honda Civic; fully trick out track racer – on a trailer

We parked, went over to the official’s table at the control tower. Martin, from Jim Russell Driving School, greeted us. He checked off my name and asked, “Where is your car?”
“Over there.” I gestured with my thumb. “Where?”, he asked again.
“There, I replied. “The black sedan beside the minivan.”
“Oh . . .” Martin paused. “Have you been on this track before – I mean – with that . . . uh, car?”

I assured him I had.

“Very well, then. Driver’s meeting back here at nine. Better hurry to get your car prepped”.

We wandered back to the car and opened the trunk. Guy lifted out a bag with camera, soft drinks and stop watch along with a folding chair. I grabbed a microfibre cloth to wipe the road dust off the back lights and trunk panel. I popped the hood, snapped open the fuse box and extracted fuse 11 (the power to the ECM). With our prep work 75% done, we wandered over to some of the other drivers and their rides.

Tires being changed; laptops plugged into ECM’s; various piles of stuff being piled along the paddock walls – very serious wrinkled brows abounded – except for us and Dean, the proud owner of the shiny new Ferrari.

On my way back to the drivers’ meeting, I pop fuse 11 back in and hope that my computer will wake up and think it’s in a race car. The meeting is short. Martin repeats several times that we are only here to run laps – not to race. He outlines 3 passing zones and emphasizes that passing is on the right only and passes must be complete well before the corners. No blocking will be tolerated and definitely only single file in corners.

We roll our cars into the pits. I put my helmet, gloves and surf shoes. Belt buckled. Seat moved up so I’m hunched over the wheel. Windows down. Engine on. Marshall gives me the Go signal. ESP in the “On” position. Autostick into 4th.

Rolling down the pit lane. Glance to the right. Half throttle – on to the track into the sweeping right, off camber, plunging downhill, then uphill still sweeping right, back downhill – heading for the esses carrying 100 mph – hard braking to the extreme left of the track down to 40 mph – turn in – trail the throttle, sacrifice the right turn to set up for the left – clip the apex- full power on, drift to the right – careful - too far – on the rumble strip, down the short straight. Brake for the right 90 degree. Sweep into medium left turn – full throttle up hill to the bridge – hug the cement wall – late brake into the tunnel – turn left for the corner you can’t see – aim for late apex – power on –easy – car is unsettled – into very fast right – full power downhill straight to the tight right hairpin at Namerow. Hug the left side of the track – wait for the 200 ft marker before braking – no mistakes here – the run off is a rock outcrop – turn in hard to the right – throw out the tail – won’t go with full ESP on – trail brake – miss the apex – out of shape for the left sweeper onto the pit straight. Can’t get full throttle until on straight. Gotta get that better next time.

Down the straight – tires coming up to temperature – felt really sticky – braking is better – must be the tires as well – G-forces in corners seem higher – about to find out as we hit the end of the long pit straight touch the brakes then plummet into Diablo at over 110 mph. This corner can be scary fast, with just the right balance of throttle out to the limits of tire grip. Oh yeah! The KDW’s are hot now and gripping the tarmac. Drift too far left and you’re on the grass sliding off the edge of the mountain.

The laps roll by, a few cars pass me – I pass a couple. Lap times are coming down. One problem with the ESP on is that it interferes with acceleration as you power out of the curves. It keeps applying brakes and cutting throttle as soon as it senses any lateral slip.

We run the second heat with the ESP in the “Off” position. Easy through the first 2 laps to warm up tires. By the third lap, I’m into the rhythm and ready to see if we can beat the first heat times. The car is fast through Diablo as I’m able to get just the right degree of rear drift to counteract the understeer. Brake hard for the esses. Got a good exit here. The blue Acura is moving for a pass but doesn’t have the legs. Through the hard right turn. Another good exit with lots of power through the gulch running up to the tunnel. Hug the right edge up to the wall, brake late, turn in for the corner you can’t see. Nailed it! Moderate power on for the sweeping right then down the straight to Namerow.

The blue Acura pulls out to the right again to try a pass on the short straight. I hug the extreme left. He doesn’t have the power but I decide I will back off on the upcoming pit straight to let him by as he is being so aggressive. I brake hard for the hairpin then turn in for the late apex.

CRUNCH !!!!

The Acura has driven into my right side. The fool tried to pass me in the hairpin and cut into my line –hitting me. What a bonehead! Even if we were racing you can’t cut across another’s line in a corner – that’s a black flag for certain!

No rubbing. I cut left for a shortcut into the pit lane and motion him to do the same. The Ferrari driver who was behind both of us follows as well. Roll to a stop. He rolls in ahead of me.

Helmet off, gloves off. Get out to look. Lower right side of both door panels pushed in. Damn! Go over to the young lad driving the blue ricer. He is kneeling by his left front fender which is split in 3 places and pushed in onto his front wheel.

“WTF did you do that for?” He ignores my question, but jumps up when my helmet misses his head and bounces of the top of the fender.

Before I can move in closer, Dean, the Ferrari driver grabs my upper right arm. A marshal moves in quickly. I repeat my question to the young boy racer from Quebec.

He replies in broken English, “I go to pass by you but you don’t let me”

“I didn’t stop you. I didn’t block you”, I say.

“You have too much power! I get mad - you should let me by! I try to make the pass but there’s no room.”

Mr. Ferrari interjects, “You cut him off. He was already into his turn.”

The marshals have a quick conference. They come back and tell the Acura driver to pack up, leave and never come back again. He goes to drive his car up to his trailer in the paddock.

“Not so fast” I say. “What are you going to do about my damage?” He shrugs and turns away. I drive my 300C up beside him and swing it left with my front bumper aimed at his right passenger door, about 1 foot away. I explain my next course of action. His wallet comes out. I back up. He leaves. I do not rejoin the second heat, choosing rather to go for a long walk.

My Irish temper has subsided from volcanic to slow boil. No homicide committed. Careful check of my 300C reveals only cosmetic damage. Helmet and gloves on. Back in the saddle for the third heat. I opt not to pull fuse #17 at this time but to wait until after lunch. For a while, I follow the Ferrari. The sound from the engine is a symphony of valves, gears, belts, air and exhaust. Nothing sounds like a Ferrari.

Our lap times for the morning are consistent; only slightly faster with ESP off rather than on. The car feels faster than back in June. Maybe taking the resonators off makes a difference – or are we just getting out of the corners faster with the new tires? We are running the short track around 1 minute: 21 seconds; the Ferrari is turning 1:15; the red vette at 1:09. "

call these guys and see if they have CASC discounts to members. https://www.cscracing.com/

Carl offers discount to MCO members ( i think ? - I haven't kept up to the latest offers. )

I don't know who can sell new for 600cdn? I bought mine used, so that's no help.

HANS Sport Series devices started at $595 for a small then the price goes up. $695 for Medium and Large. $795 for X-Large. Stupid really, but prices by size is nothing new.

CSC racing is who I will be getting them through, there are no discounts on Hans, Best I can do is sell at CSC racing's sell price myself.

I say we those of us looking should buy from MANL to support a local brother. One bulk order works out cheaper for all of us on shipping.

You guys are the best, I am always so appreciative of the help. I had a nice chat with Kelly at CSC, at first I had to order 5 at a time, but she will let me order one at a time if need be. But please make sure you order the correct product number and model as there are no returns.

Jeez - I chauffeured Grant down to Perry's today in the limo. Good thing - 'cause we needed it to haul all the loot back. Carl was grinning ear to ear as Grant tried to buy out the store.

Me - I just picked up a couple of little bits & pieces . . . .

Stumbled across this the other day. If this doesn't make you want to get a HANS, not much will.

Keep them coming...I like justifying purchases of that size to the wife with videos like these.

However, the response of 'if you weren't racing you wouldn't need it' shut me right down :)

Never a good thing showing a crash to the wife. Nothing good can ever come out of that. The fact that we know is more than enough

Curious, what did you boys buy?

Curious, what did you boys buy?

For me - mostly Bits & Pieces - padding for my cage build; window net & mount; Scroth Pro II Hans 6 point 2" Belts; Hans Anchor Kit for new Helmet; new Sparco fireproof undershirt.

Nothing really exciting . . .

Great, well-attended meeting yesterday. Once again, the GT Series is way out in front of all other amateur road racing venues with the new Platinum Series.

Great turnout. I was really surprised by the lack of questions at the end. Stunned, or it was well explained. lol.

Only major change so far is the Pt series will take a ' less is more' approach in the beginning with less events in 2015 to get the ball rolling and not take away from what works so well in the GT challenge. We'll schedule Pt around regional events and the AISA weekend best we can.
-Every car in Pt will require a HANs type device.

And no one faster than a 2:20 in the GT series

I was curious about that. Will those that were running faster than 2:20 be able to keep it over 2:20 when they run the GT series? Can a simple tire change fix that? I can't imagine that any of the fast guys only want to run a few times in the year but the GT1 GT Series guys aren't going to want to get smoked by sub 2:20 cars.

If someone runs 2:19 in a GT race what happens? Is it the average lap speed that matters or does any lap under 2:20 cause issues?

Like I said, just curious as none of it affects me very much.
