That Williams is so light...it needs to be moving to actually touch the ground.

The Force India is just last year's car with the new nose on it...at least they revealed a real car.

Ive noticed it too. I think with the newer rules on keeping the nose low it has reduced the downforce available on the front wing. So to make up for this, they add for elements to the front wing and it gets bigger. Maybe they are making more downforce with the diffuser is why the rear looks smaller???

Rear and front for sure has been mandated to be way smaller than in years past.

Definitely.

Plus I see 2 'front' wings.

The main one at the end of the nose, and the one sticking out from the cockpit just behind the front wheels. That one must add a significant amount of downforce at speed.

That's the floor, and it helps the rear diffuser generate downforce. It's not a wing.

Wookie
January 23rd, 2015, 10:27am
I understand that. But look at the design. It's even angled from the tip to push the air up. Can't tell me that doesn't add downforce right under the drivers legs.

"the forward barge board (http://www.formula1-dictionary.net/barge_boards.html) you can see on the picture of Mercedes F1 car up, acts solely as a vortex generator (http://www.formula1-dictionary.net/vortex.html). They're cambered like a wing. The rotational direction of that vortex will be counterclockwise, and because the vortex is traveling downward, it sends down-wash approaching the underbody, feeding it with additional air and acting as the curtain, which is very favorable."

http://www.formula1-dictionary.net/undertray.html

So no, it doesn't create downforce under the driver's legs, it helps rear downforce.

petawawarace
January 23rd, 2015, 12:07pm
Jon, The "Barge boards" are the vertical pieces on the side of the car, and on older spec cars some of these were under the nose, but they would direct air out the side of the car. And yes they are vortex generators. The piece under the nose acts like a splitter and does provide some small downforce, but more importantly separates the air going under the floor to the rear diffuser. There are actually two diffusers on a flatbottom car. The flat floor is "raked" and acts like a diffuser (without side plates). The "splitter" piece just extends this feature and makes it longer.

Fernando Alonso has escaped injury following his accident during pre-season Formula 1 testing at Barcelona this morning.

The double F1 world champion was airlifted to hospital (http://m.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/117772) following an incident during his 21st lap of running at the Circuit de Catalunya, where Alonso's McLaren struck the inside wall exiting the long, fast Turn 3 right-hander.

Alonso was taken to the circuit medical centre where he was reported as conscious and talking to doctors.
McLaren said the results of a CT scan at a nearby hospital revealed no injuries.

Alonso's team-mate Jenson Button had been due to take over driving duties this afternoon, but McLaren confirmed the MP4-30 would not run again following Alonso's incident.

McLaren-Honda has suffered a troubled four days in Barcelona, with a recurring fault with a seal on the MGU-K (http://m.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/117762)part of the Energy Recovery System severely restricting its running.

http://m.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/117773/alonso-uninjured-mclaren-ends-test

Sebastian Vettel has been speaking about Fernando Alonso's accident. The Ferrari driver was right behind Alonso at the time of the incident, and said: "The speed was slow - maybe 150kph. Then he turned right into the wall. It looked strange."

Pretty thorough response from McLaren:

Statement from McLaren-Honda
Barcelona, February 23rd

We are pleased to confirm that, having been involved in an on-track incident at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya (Spain) on February 22nd, Fernando Alonso is making a solid recovery in hospital, and is chatting to family, friends and hospital staff.

From the scene of the incident he was driven to the circuit’s medical centre, where he was given first aid and, as per normal procedures, was sedated in preparation for an air-lift to hospital.

In hospital a thorough and complete analysis of his condition was performed, involving CT scans and MRI scans, all of which were completely normal.
In order to provide the privacy and tranquillity required to facilitate a peaceful recuperation, he is being kept in hospital for further observation, and to recover from the effects of the medication that successfully managed his routine sedation yesterday.

We intend to give him every opportunity to make a rapid and complete recovery, and will evaluate in due course whether or not he will participate in the next Barcelona test.

Over the past 24 hours, we have been carrying out a detailed analysis of the damage to Fernando’s car, and its associated telemetry data, in order fully to understand the cause, or causes, of his accident. Even at this early stage, we have been able to reach some firm conclusions.

His car ran wide at the entry to Turn Three – which is a fast uphill right-hander – allowing it to run onto the Astroturf that lines the outside of the track. A consequent loss of traction caused a degree of instability, spitting it back towards the inside of the circuit, where it regained traction and struck the wall side-on.

Our findings indicate that the accident was caused by the unpredictably gusty winds at that part of the circuit at that time, and which had affected other drivers similarly (eg, Carlos Sainz Jnr).

We can categorically state that there is no evidence that indicates that Fernando’s car suffered mechanical failure of any kind. We can also confirm that absolutely no loss of aerodynamic pressure was recorded, which fact indicates that the car did not suffer any aerodynamic loss, despite the fact that it was subjected to a significant level of g-force. Finally, we can also disclose that no electrical discharge or irregularity of any kind occurred in the car’s ERS system, either before, during or after the incident.

That last point refutes the erroneous rumours that have spread recently to the effect that Fernando was rendered unconscious by an electrical fault. That is simply not true. Our data clearly shows that he was downshifting while applying full brake pressure right up to the moment of the first impact – something that clearly would not have been possible had he been unconscious at the time.

Our data also confirms that Fernando’s car struck the inside concrete wall, first with its front-right wheel and then with its rear-right. It was a significant lateral impact, resulting in damage to the front upright and axle.

After the initial impact, the car slid down the wall for about 15 seconds before coming to a halt. All four wheels remained attached to the car, but no damage was sustained by the bodywork or crash structure between the front and rear wheels.

We wish Fernando a very speedy recovery. As and when we have further updates to share, we will of course do so.

Sebastian Vettel (http://en.espnf1.com/f1/motorsport/driver/1247.html) poked fun at Nico Rosberg's suggestion he wants to see the field close up after Mercedes' dominant one-two at the Australian Grand Prix.
Australia confirmed Mercedes has carried over a huge advantage from 2014, with Vettel 34 seconds adrift of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg in third. In the post-race press conference Rosberg was asked for his opinion on the huge gap enjoyed by Mercedes.
"I hope we can have a good fight," he replied. "That would be awesome. I think the next couple of races we're going to be leading the way for sure, and we're going to try and keep it that way, but we know it would be good if they can come a bit closer, as long as they don't come too close…"
At that point, Vettel piped up from the other side of Lewis Hamilton. The exchange went as follows:
Vettel: "Be honest, do you really hope so!? [Laughs] Seriously? Seriously, they finished 30 seconds ahead of us and you hope that's it going to be closer. So you hope you slow down, is that what you're saying?"
Rosberg: "I hope you can give us a challenge because it's important for the sport and for the fans and I do think about the show. Half of me, or a part of me, thinks about the show because I want to give people a great time watching or on the track. So if you do come a bit closer, that would be awesome.
Vettel: "That's fine. My first suggestion, if you don't mind, could be that your garage becomes public for Malaysia and everyone can have a look. Is that what you're suggesting? No, I'm joking."
Rosberg: "You can come if you want. We can invite you."
Vettel: "Thank you for the invite, I'll come. Engineer's room? Debrief, I'll be there."
Rosberg looked far from amused with the comments from his fellow countryman and tried to get his own back later in the session when Vettel said it was disappointing to see his team-mate Kimi Raikkonen retire on lap 40.
On hearing that, Rosberg replied: "You find it a shame that your team-mate didn't finish?"
Referring to Rosberg's frosty rivalry with Lewis Hamilton last year, Vettel laughed and replied: "I don't how much you like each other but Kimi and myself we get along! So I think it is a shame ... At the moment where we are we want to make sure we catch you guys. To do that we need both of us so yes I honestly think so and I honestly didn't want to see the second car not finish today."

Happy to see McLaren at least finish. The car actually looks sorted out handling and aero wise. Force India with the Mercedes wasn't exactly having an easy time passing them. Pop another 200hp that they might be missing and it could be interesting.

The second half of the race was boring. There's going to be a big fight for second place all year long. Ferrari and Williams did finish 30 seconds behind the Mercedes. I don't see any team closing that gap during a season a really challenging Mercedes

He was really emotional over it, he really was happy about it.

I wonder why Hamilton was not able to close the gap in the end, he was going great until about +-8 laps left when I could not gain time anymore on Vettel

Vettel's reactions actually made him likable again, something he had when he was younger and lost in the last couple of seasons at RB. Was it just the domination or something else? Who knows.

Merc and Hamilton were super gracious as well avoiding "if we had" discussions and simply admitting the red cars were faster.

I've seen reports of some weird behaviour by Rosberg in the wake of quali and his interviews are getting odder and odder. Wonder what's going on there?

Amazing that Schummy's lap record from 11 years ago still stands - given all the advances in technology.

Those advances have been continuously offset by FIA measures to slow the cars down:

- 2004 had Michelin-Bridgestone tirewar -- Now on spec tires
- V10 vs V8 vs FI V6
- Downforce has steadily decreased since 2004
- Elimination of refueling has forced more conservative race management

I'm sure others can come up with other considerations.

To my mind, the downside of refueling (aside from cost and risk) was it made the pass-during-pit-stop strategy the choice way to go, which made for fewer on track passes.

I don't think the media is being fair to Rosberg. Its not like he's f'ing up all the time. Lewis is rock solid and its easy to be at the front once you are there (ie. Vettel).
He's keeping Lewis in his sights (the whole race), not making any errors. If the tables were turned, you'd hear Lewis crying and complaining more than Rosberg ever has.
He needs to keep the car in clean air, so he can't be too close. He's never going to be in a position to have an advantage (tires, fuel, whatever) unless Lewis or his crew screws something up.
He's a racer, it just sucks to be stuck firmly in P2...likely for the whole season.

Is this the thread where people call Hamilton a whiner?

HAMILTON vs ROSBERG: CHINESE GRAND PRIX PRESS CONFERENCELewis, many congratulations. Was the race as expected in terms of the challenge from Ferrari and, also, can you talk us through that radio message you got from the team about speeding up? Were you aware that Nico was getting so backed-up towards Sebastian Vettel?

LH: I wasn’t controlling his race, I was controlling my own race but, great race, I’m really happy. Definitely going into the race we thought it would be a lot closer and we knew the Ferraris were very, very good with their long run pace and also looking after their tyres. So, today the real goal was to manage the tyres. And, as I said, my goal was to look after my car. I had no real threat from Nico through the whole race. So, I just managed it and got to really enjoy it, to be honest. A few of the real good fun laps were the laps before the pitstop, which I really enjoyed. Ultimately it was a much smoother weekend than we had in the last race where we got the whole, full practice sessions, on my side of the garage at least. And it made a real big difference to the balance of the car for the race. So really happy, and yeah, kinda excited.

Q: Nico, can you talk us through your view of the race today. Started second, finished second but you sounded at times as though you felt at times under a little bit of unnecessary pressure maybe?
NR: No. It’s just now interesting to hear from you, Lewis, that you were just thinking about yourself with the pace in front, and necessarily that was compromising my race. Driving slower than was maybe necessary at the beginning of stints meant that Sebastian was very close to me and that opened up the opportunity for Sebastian to try that early pit-stop to try and jump me. And then I had to cover him. So, first of all it was unnecessarily close with Sebastian as a result, and also it cost me a lot of race time as a result because I had to cover him and then my tyres died at the end of the race because my stint was just so much longer. So I’m unhappy about that, of course, today. Other than that, not much to say.

Q: Lewis, would you like to respond?

LH: Not really! My job is not to… it’s not my job to look after Nico’s race. My job’s to manage the car and bring the car home as healthy and as fast as possible – and that’s what I did. I didn’t do anything intentionally to slow any of the cars up. I just was focussing on myself. If Nico wanted to get by he could have tried but he didn’t.

I can't see this happening, but money changes alot of things. Look at Maldonado.

Danica Patrick could yet find a place on the 2016 F1 grid with the new Haas team.

Patrick is currently contesting the NASCAR series over in America, backed by long-time backer GoDaddy.
However, her sponsorship deal with the web hosting company is set conclude at the end of the year.
And with her future undecided, Gene Haas has revealed he could yet bring her over to Formula 1.
"If the right sponsor came along then anything is possible," Haas told Autosport.
"Danica Patrick is highly marketable, and if anything we're very lucky GoDaddy is giving us enough time to find a sponsor that she'll fit with because she can sell anything.
"She has as much attention at the race track as any of the drivers, so she's a very valuable person."
The team owner, though, concedes it would be "very difficult" for Patrick to make the swap but says she is not the only American driver in the running.
"We kind of have to wait until mid-summer and really see who's available.
"Obviously Formula 1 cars are a little unique, you probably have to have someone with relative experience of driving these cars.
"But we don't want to sit here and say no to anything, although the probabilities, and obviously with Danica in NASCAR, it's very difficult to participate in F1.
"Obviously it would be a home run to put an American driver in an American Formula 1 team, but it takes a lot of alignment of the stars for that to happen."

Whoa. A McLaren is 8th quickest!
Finished 8th too, not bad. He was within a quarter second of the McLaren's pace during the race.

Was looking forward to the podium but NBC feed stopped just after the checkers.
I laughed so hard when he crashed into the 3rd place sign.

Yeah, he pushed it almost all the way even with the 1st place sign? Coincidence? Spoiled brat. Talented, spoiled brat.

Toto Wolff:
"What a crazy day. I don’t think there has ever been a more bittersweet feeling than this one. We have won the Monaco Grand Prix and we have lost the Monaco Grand Prix all at the same time. First of all, we must apologise to Lewis Hamilton (https://www.facebook.com/LewisHamilton). We win and we lose together and what I am proud of in this team is that we take collective responsibility. But this is a day when we simply have to say sorry to our driver, because our mistake cost him the victory here. What happened? In simple terms, we got our numbers wrong. We thought we had the gap for Lewis to take fresh tyres and come back out in the lead behind the Safety Car, ahead of Nico and covering off any risk of another competitor taking fresh tyres. But the calculation was incorrect and he came out in third place. It was our decision to call him in and our mistake, pure and simple; in these situations, a driver trusts his team. Lewis had driven flawlessly until then and really delivered a perfect weekend, with a stunning pole lap and a masterful race. There’s nothing more to say other than to highlight the grace with which he handled the situation; he was a leader and a true sportsman this afternoon. As for Nico Rosberg (https://www.facebook.com/nicorosberg), he didn’t put a foot wrong all day, and it would be wrong if we didn’t take the time to recognise his achievement: a third consecutive win in Monaco is something only three other drivers in history have achieved before. It is a very special moment indeed and one for him to savour. He didn’t have the pace of Lewis today but, in this sport, you take the victories any way they come. This, too, is motor racing. We now need to stay calm and analyse how we made the mistake this afternoon. We will be harshly self-critical behind closed doors and this experience will make us a better and a stronger team in the races ahead. There is still a very long way to go in this championship and today showed that we have the performance in our car to do the job this year."

I thought he handled it with class.
Of course he's going to be disappointed. It's the fucking Monaco GP.

Lol.

Thought that was a good way to get his point across. Took his sweet time getting back too. Was probably seeing red.

Dunno in the interviews after he handled it pretty well.

Vettel was hilarious "I'm happy!"

First the guy knows he's being film and watched by millions of people world wide. What does he do. Park the car on the track on his way back, sobbing. Comes in 'Circuit fermer' late and hits the #3 sign to make a point on world TV that he is pissed off. Takes about 2 minutes to get out of the car in super slow motion, does the long face to everyone like the world came to an end. More sobbing. Then answers questions with the most politically correct answer ever, which didn't match his body language at all, meaning it's all BS but that's what everyone wants to hear. Then More sobbing, sobbing, sobbing. Starts to leave the winning circle half way in the interviews, but get push back. More sobbing. All I saw from Hamilton is little Prince and his crew fucked up and he's SO SAD about it. Yeah, bad acting like a 3 year old who messed up and didn't get his candy because of it.

Vettel sounded true. 'i'm very happy about you guys fucking up'

Nico 'A win is a win' YEAH! I feel bad about Lewis but A win is a win! Yeah!

I don't think Nico feels bad. I know I wouldn't if I was racing. Lewis dragging his feet like a kid was pathetic, I'd never do that, I would also tell the press and everyone what I really think. It's the Monaco GP, it sucks, it wasn't his mistake. The team screwed up, off to the next race. End of interviews.

Win like a champ, lose like a champ. It would be tougher if it would be his mistake he screwed up, I still wouldn't drag my feet like he did. I thought he'd mature as a driver this year, still acts like a kid.

Mario
May 25th, 2015, 07:35pm
Yeah you're right, the feel bad about Lewis was to match Lewis's perfectly formulated answers. He felt compelled to play along.

Maybe something like, "We got it wrong this time and those are the breaks. We'll get this one back" would've been a bit classier. There's a big difference between wearing your heart on your sleeve and being an inconsiderate blaming git. It's not like the team tried to screw up. They got it wrong but they don't need some pissy long-faced silver-spoon-in-mouth entitled EMPLOYEE to rub their faces in it for all the world to see. Shameful, disgraceful and worst of all selfish and disrespectful to every one on the TEAM who is supporting his Grand Prix championship bid.

That would actually take 1.77 year if you could count one dollars per second nonstop without sleeping

I'm not gonna defend Hamilton but yeah, hissy fit for sure, very pissed his team made an error that costed him the race.

On the other hand, he did not go with cameras in his face over his team making crappy decisions, he just wanted to get the hell out of there.

As much as I don't really like Hammy. I can see his reasoning. He was probably amazingly pissed off. He was calming himself down so he didn't do something really stupid. We've all been there, except not on the world stage. He tried his best to act it away for the cameras, but come on this is the world championship, years ago helmets would have been thrown.

Or in Nascar kicks and punches thrown as well.
