I would really like to get one more track day in but the only date that works is October 18th. However, unless it's raining I really want to go out with the Contis. It's going to be tough running with street tires after that last race ;(

So, will I be able to run them in October? Does the temp of the track just prolong the warm up of the tires or is there a point where they just won't let you/you shouldn't run slicks anymore?

I would also like to know who is going to be out that day...I'd really like to spend about half my day getting pointers and the other half going out solo and seeing how the inevitable changes feel.

Technically, slicks need to be working at their optimal temperature. In cool conditions below 10 degrees, who knows what a Conti will do.

We ran the fastest lap ever in the race car at 10C on our slicks. As long as you drive hard they will heat up.

The Contis I was running sure felt awesome on the last GT race and I don't think that day ever got above 11C. However, does it matter what temp the track is? If I just warm up the tires more aggressively they will eventually hit their operating range?

wing
September 23rd, 2014, 10:30pm
It was like 2 degrees first track day of the season and my slicks worked, just be careful for a few laps, they will be hard until warmed up.

I was told that the track is grippiest when the track surface and the air temp are the same.

After the porsche thing a couple of years ago I did a lapping day - I found the heavy rubber that was put down was super slick. Ended up driving the wet line mostly.

The track was also oddly slippery for a while after this year's IMSA weekend. I wonder if the weird rubber compounds they were using were a factor, or whether it was just gobs of rubber.

Anyway, like James said, just warm up your tires for a few laps and then drive hard. They should work just fine. Just don't try it in the rain.

Gobs of rubber. You can peel it off the track surface.

Apex tried to show me how to keep my car off the wall last year at Mosport but I wouldn't listen. They were INCREDIBLE in the aftermath. I wouldn't hesitate to use them again.

Running in the rain is great! You reach the limits that much sooner and get a real feel for how the car behaves.

When I was with Pat on the track all I ever saw was the back of his SRT8. When we first went out he was warming up his brakes/tires and with the spray coming off his car and the cloud of leaves he would stir up I'd find myself a little too close before I realized it.

I gave him a wide berth but once we got moving I tried and failed to catch him. He's just got too much skill and too much power.

Looking forward to being out there with you next year, Pat!

Ok. Young guy gets into a blackish/blueish chumpish car with his girlfriend on October 18th for the first open lapping run around 1:30. Was likely driving with his cock instead of his brain and was showing her what an awesome race car driver he was (maybe not though. Either way, he overdrove the conditions).

Somehow the ambulance couldn't find him at first? He wedged himself somewhere tough to see. That's what was coming over the radios. Anyways, they cleared it quickly and the handful of us still there got back out and stayed on the track.

Bank 1 sensor 2.

That's the one in the cat. If it is the first one the car will run like shit. Second one doesn't really matter.

Oh ok. I already bought a cat o2 sensor before which I haven't installed yet. I couldn't unseize the rear o2 sensor when I tried before, but I'll try again. Thanks for the offer though.

Omg, yesterday was epic. 8legs brought out the vette and the yellow BMW for some "testing."

Rolled the vette out- good to go. Rolled the yellow car out, and it pukes its oil all over the paddock. After thoroughly coating our paddock area, car gets fixed and both are good to go.

Chris and I go out in the vette first, and then go to the BMW.

The corvette is AWESOME! On the michelins it has so much grip.... I managed a 2:19 on Greg's lap timer. Not bad for a stock car with a cage & a wing!

Next up was the yellow BMW. This thing is insane. Unreal. Never driven a car so epic. By the end of the 30min I was just STARTING to get used to the car, and starting to push more and more. Unfortunately I didn't get a clean lap in the end of the session, but I was able to put down a 2:17 early on- pretty stoked about that too.

All in all, ended the season on a high. Glad I was able to drive a fast car!

Pumped to get my car running next year :)

hmm so I asked an rx8 forum about why the rx8 was painted the way it was. It seems to be in honor of the 787b. That's why it had all those white lines making triangles.

Video should be ready soon. Nothing interesting happened so I kept it to my best lap. This is on the PSS's with a mostly dry track. Once the rain let up I was running 2:33's pretty consistently but it looks like I managed to squeak in a 2:31 here. I can't wait to get the slicks back on!

You should drive with both hands. One at 9 o'clock at the other at 3 o'clock. Driving with one hand on the steering wheel is dangerous IMO. I’m just saying cause I like you Grant. If that hand slips in a corner, outch. Beside that, great lap

whoa... yeah - two hands dude! You're making it WAY harder on yourself, and way more dangerous.

Plus, keeping one hand on the shifter destroys your synchros and you'll ruin the tranny in no time.

OK. Just to be clear...I was not trying to be a gangstah. I was trying to hold on! Hands in that position just felt right but it also convinced me that I need seats...which I am working on with Mani now. Someone sitting in the car to call me a moron on that day would have been very helpful though...
