I always wondered about sand on the surface . . . is that something that happens?

dbg
July 23rd, 2014, 11:22am
Yes. You get sand on the track every time someone puts wheels off track. It clears off pretty quickly though.

They've been doing more and more bike events, so they've actually added more sand for them to land in. If you spin off track and go too far in, you're not driving back out. In fact they have to drag you out with the tow truck on the track, so if you're at a funny angle it's not unusual for the car to get damaged by the tow instead of the spin.

Notice how the miata guy calls it MRLS. it's Laguna Seca man.

and yah, RS3s are practice tires, time for slicks!

Here's my weak Laguna story. I drove there and watched a race. Didn't know what track days were at the time.

Just means I gotta go back. :)

It's called Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. In fact the sign at the entrance doesn't include the Laguna Seca part. I tell ya, these sponsors are out of control.

Okay, here's the only clean lap I got (too much traffic). The motor was getting hot so it started power limiting part-way through.

You can hear the tires. The corkscrew is awesome. The first couple of times around I was just laughing it was so much fun.

Thanks! Got the line figured out pretty quick. Corner 6 was kinda wide on that lap, but other than that (and the power limit) I was reasonably happy with it.

Crazy elevation changes, and not just the corkscrew. Corners 2, 6, and 9 are also lots of fun. Corner 11 takes a bit of practice to get right.

Exactly.

That's not normal; they were lining up to do a one-lap time trial. They enter the track before the front straight by driving backwards up the exit. One car is released every 15 seconds so they don't catch up to each other. One full lap and then exit by emergency exit on corner 5.

That's another fun one. You can take it faster than you'd think; somehow the crazy elevation change helps the car rotate. I didn't really do it right on that particular lap, but it still worked.

I might be going to California in a few weeks, I contacted them about options, they don't have rentals like the bogie mustangs or any program to drive the track really. I might rent a prius and join on a club day event. I hope this works out.

I was planning on renting the slowest most dangerous thing I could find in manual if possible.

I contacted a few events clubs. Willing to have instructor to check me out. I go slow take it easy, "OMG this is so much fun!" they get out send me off... then I go flat out. Pretty sure I'll be able to do this.

The track is super easy to get use to. Maybe because I did so many laps in video games. But even so, I got comfy after 4 laps or so.

Just the corner after the corkscrew I was a little worried I was going to crash each time... Other than that I was confident to push.

Worth it.
