They do, and it includes a cool system that warns the driver when a faster car is overtaking.

So like the Nissan system then. But Nissan says they are the first... to run without mirrors.

EDIT: looks like the same system lol

Ya, but it can only be used 5 times before you have to rebuild it.

The Corvette still has wing mirrors, just no rearview.

It's an awesome system, but if it fails, I'm sure there is a battery back up, but if it fails and homer needs to head back to pit lane for a new ipadmirror, what system does he use in the meantime?

Bartron
June 11th, 2014, 05:40pm
His huge brass balls?

Probably just his wing mirrors. The prototypes use only wing mirrors in most cases.

Wookie
June 11th, 2014, 05:52pm
They should make pop out mirrors that automatically deploy in case of system malfunction.

Tesla Model X will be launching next year with cameras instead of mirrors. Mirrors are a big source of aerodynamic drag. They had to get regulators to agree of course.

The 12-member Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, which represents such companies as Tesla, General Motors, Toyota and Volkswagen, filed a petition today with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration seeking permission to take that leap. march 31st.

When the brought out the Model X prototype, it had the cameras. Really cool console with rear view either side of the speedo. Later versions of the prototype had mirrors because the regulators said so. Then about six months ago the web site pictures all went back to having the cameras again. Apparently they got the regulators to buy in. At least in the USA anyway.

The Model X will have AWD, so despite being heavier it will be almost as fast as my P85. They are using two motors (smaller one in front) and Elon says that they managed to do this with no penalty in efficiency / range.

I have no plans to buy one. Tesla already has all my money. Would love the AWD though. (There are rumours of a Model S AWD coming.)

wing
June 11th, 2014, 06:59pm
That's cool. Not like they are the first to have a concept with cameras, most cars do then they remove them for cost savings and regulations

dbg
June 11th, 2014, 07:02pm
Yeah, but Tesla doesn't believe in concept cars. Elon thinks it's lame that people show these beautiful cool cars and then the real thing is bland. He thinks the real thing should be better than the prototype, not worse.

Oh, and my Model S is only 12.7 quarter mile. Someone gave me this pic...

I like the suicide doors in the back. Just wish more people would buy them so the prices would come down, then I could get one. with a 300 km autonomy on a full charge, that’s good enough for me.

dbg
June 11th, 2014, 07:29pm
True enough, Tesla isn't interested in building track cars. But it's a very straightforward derail. Lemans -> Supercars -> rear view cameras -> Tesla.

Any sources for IMSA 6 Hours At The Glen from this past weekend?
Always awesome to watch races from there, but was pissed to find out the live stream applied to overseas only. Or FOX Sports which I don't got.

thanks andre! I've been watching the LeMans 2014 on youtube for the past little while..a couple hrs here and there. Great stuff! Amazing how the exact same cars, around the exact same corners, for lap after lap can stay interesting :)

Is there a broadcast feed, or only the in-cars? ....nm, found it! Need to scroll up the list of thumbnails.

I was there today, some awesome racing! Was kinda hoping for the Viper to finish ahead of the Corvette boys as abit of an underdog. PS. That new Lamborghini Hurucan is awesome... and that Hell Cat sounds unreal.
