Crammed schedule. So 20 minutes for qualifications and each race?

luker
May 9th, 2014, 12:15pm
Kind of surprised it is only 20 minute races. Might have chosen different event if I'd know that ahead of time. Paying a $100 more for less track time than a regular event really kind of blows.

usually 35-45 minutes, plus a 20 minute practice. so you are getting a bit more seat time at this event.

I bought Connell's spot.

The car is still on stands. It needs a coil and engine management. Maybe some brake work. I hope the new trans/clutch works. The new shift linkage should hit most of the gears. I hope the braze on the rad holds. The wheel bearings should be fine a few more races. The hood might not close.

See you there!

Yeah buzz kill.

Exceeded my expectations on a greasy track, got down to 2:12, then in the race best was 2:13 yeah I was pushing harder and running faster. Stohr guy said he was 6 seconds slower then normal, track was greasy.

I finished 2nd which blew me away! Hopefully tomorrows race in the AM the track will be better and I can get below 2:10

I feel hurt was the libre race not exciting? Field was small. Was great for me, still reeling nose to tale for almost the entire race I thought I would get the jump on the guys in front of me but they were faster on the straights and I couldn't get a jump. Closest I got was about my nose maybe 2-3 feet on the back of the car in front and had to let off coming into the corner as I wasn't going to make it.

Lew's car is like 30 feet wide. Everyone is afraid to dive in on him, even the super fast cars had a hard time passing him.

That was me. The kids were real troopers too. Lasted the whole afternoon. For MRdads, Burnstown Beach is an awesome spot to have a picnic lunch. There's a 3-storey play structure there. It's bonkers.

We were right next to you for the early part of the afternoon I guess. We moved to the 2nd floor balcony of the new garages later on.

Having a blast in Luker's BMW today got the car down to a 2m27.4 there is still more time out there. Driving the car like my momentum VW Jetta. I shouldn't. I need to drive it harder in to the corner and mash the brakes harder. I brake light and too long or try not to brake much at all.

Ran out of talent once coming out of 4 left, and took to the grass. Amazing how well it slows down in the dirt. Collected myself up and only lost one place because of going off. The blue BMW behind me was already hassling me and was likely to have to concede the position anyhow. Was trying to gap him and my attempt to run flat through 4 left failed when I turned in too early.

All good. Looking forward to race three.

Porsche GT3
Porsche 944

Formula Libre

I didn't bother editing or arranging the photos and they're free to download for anyone that wants 'em. For example, I took a bunch of pictures of both Formula Libre and (Gentlemans!) GT races where I know several members of MR were competing. If you know of anyone else that was in those races and wanted to grab some pictures, feel free to share the link.

Was all set to make the pass for 3rd on lap 4, been waving for the blue flag and turn 15 was set to give out the blue, but then they thought the meatball was a better idea because of all the smoke they saw.
Then when I went past them they saw flames under the car.

I saw the smoke in the mirror, figured axle explosion again because all the gauges were perfect. gah.

start rolling down pit lane and the safety crew was standing there with fire extinguishers, "hey greg, get out" ooh ok. fire was out by the time I stopped, but lots of smoke.

The system (pointing forward on the front straight) works. I called in for the blue flag and they got it on that lap. too bad that coincided with the meatball flames. The one time I didn't have my gloves on me the whole weekend was when you rolled in. Doh. Am happy we didn't have to douse the 1morelap vette with cold fire.

I was in the passenger seat of the Yaris all weekend - what a blast! that little car can turn - it just needs more power to keep up with the big boys.

Jess did a fantastic job, especially managing engine issues all weekend (still can't rev past 6000rpm). Third race was definitely the best - shavexd 4 seconds off her lap time, was keeping up with GT2 cars in the corners... it was awesome!

How many of you can say that you took corner 1 at 10km/h less than your top speed? Jess was taking the kink, spoon, 4left... all flat out. Kink at 130km/h, when her top speed at the end of rocky road was 140km/h.... so awesome!

Dad was also killing it all weekend - 2:15.3 was his best lap of the weekend IIRC. insane. Kinda wish I had my car out - GTR doors were ready to be had. Congrats Greg - I know you had a frustrating weekend, but you did a great job, and kept your cool :)

Was checking over my logs some more as the guy driving the black radical was telling me he was using 2nd gear in 6 and in 12/14, 19 and sometimes 8.

I was thinking he was bonkers, but it sounded like he had the same gearing as me. Looking at the logs, looks like I can do about 120km/h in 2nd gear. In corner 6 I'm about 90km/h at the final apex before getting on the gas, so 2nd would be beneficial there perhaps. 8 is tricky not sure that's a great place for 2nd gear. 12, yup totally makes sense, go into 12 in 2nd, to go third through 13 and back down to 2nd for 14. Tried it a few times in the 2nd race, locked my rears once and nearly spun, gotta get better at that rev match.

Not sure about 19, it would give me a better exit but may mean a taste of the concrete wall, I'll just concentrate on getting on the gas earlier for 19 instead.

Finally home, Crazy fun weekend at the Calabogie Motorsports Park (https://www.facebook.com/CalabogieMotorsportsPark)Grand Prix in The Calabogie GT Challenge (https://www.facebook.com/CalabogieGT)

*warning wall of text!

Goofed in Qualifying with a hood that popped open, started Race1 in 4th place, Steve Morneau (https://www.facebook.com/steve.morneau505) and Pierre Bernier (https://www.facebook.com/monaco.pierre) Setting the pace with times in the 14's 15s,
looking like a top 5 weekend on paper. R1 was a lot of fun, battled Geoff Chislett (https://www.facebook.com/geoff.chislett) and Olivier for 3rd, stayed in the middle of our 3some most of the race,
then Olivier figured out our racing line and got passed us in the uber sweet GTR, finished R1 in 5th.
Won some beer as a door prize! Broadhead Beer! Fun nite making friends with the locals, sword cakes, Edmonds name that tune world champs and getting to hear Geoffs true accent, yah bye!

Sunday am R2 started great with an early pass on Geoff and I glued myself to the bumper of the GTR for the first 2 laps
then they stretched their legs and I couldn't catch em. I ran 2;19s every lap but it wasn't enough to catch the big 3 in the 15's. Solid 4th place!

Race 3, the finale of the weekend with the biggest field of cars (25) was off to a great start again,
I was keeping pace with the GTR and by lap 4 it looked like I could make the pass for 3rd place,
but then the meatball flag was shown to me-- gah? wat? Look in the mirror and a big cloud of smoke... noooooo.
gauges are ok? whats up? axle boots again? can't be... gutted, come into pitlane,
still some smoke and there's the whole CMP Fire safety crew waiting for me. Sup guys? " Hey Greg, get out, you're on fire " " oh ok."
buzzkill, love the CMP safety teams, it's great to know they're on the ball.

Turns out the dip stick tube popped up about an inch ( I need a new stick ) and sprayed oil all over the headers. Oil is flammable? who knew.

Let it cool off while we celebrated the podiums with the other racers, great to see some new faces up there, we'll get em next time!

Car was still ok, but figured it would be a good idea to pressure wash all the oil off... whoops, too much water, car won't start. lolz. of course.
let it dry over nite, still no dice, but push starts are great. Drove east to Gettys and that was enough to burn off any hidden water.
little exhausted but ready for Race 6 July 18th!!

Those 944s were quite intense. There was one off-track excursion at Temptation where a yellow car went off and without lifting off the throttle rejoined right beside his would-be passer and only barely lost his spot.

Talking about Porsches, the Porsche Macan safety/pace car was interesting. Not a real Porsche IMHO, but interesting. See if you can spot the real Porsche:

Was bigger than I thought. Or maybe because everytime I saw it was driving past in my radical and thought he was going to run me over.

I loved watching and smelling the brakes off the Impala that went around during lunch on Saturday. After he'd run through Quarry, about a minute later the brake smell would make it's way to the top!

the porsche pace car guy drove that think like it was a race car.

it lowered itself when he hammered it out of pit lane.

Here's a quick, but shitty, look at Mark's off after Rocky Rd. on the first lap of the last race. No adjustment on my camera for lighting, unfortunately. You mostly just see a cloud of smoke through the washed out video on the right hand side.

I see it revving to 10,000, but it doesn't sound like any more than 3500. sounds like a short shift in every gear.
Sounds pretty revvy to me!
