Bernie steps down... http://bit.ly/LjLFvB

Claims of bribery by prosecutors in Germany continue to haunt Bernie Ecclestone, with the allegations getting so serious that the British billionaire and Formula One figurehead was finally indicted last summer (http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1085608_f1-boss-bernie-ecclestone-indicted-for-bribery-in-germany). The 83-year-old has since stepped down from the board of the company which runs F1, Delta Topco, though he will continue to run its day-to-day operations.

Bernie’s got to be guilty of something but he is Bernie.

The $44 million payment in question was made surrounding the sale of F1 to CVC Capital Partners (which owns Delta Topco) in 2005 as Ecclestone sought to acquire the shares held by Gribkowsky's bank, BayernLB. In 2012, Gribkowsky admitted to taking the money (http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1077126_banker-admits-taking-bribes-from-bernie-f1-boss-back-in-spotlight) from Ecclestone and was found guilty of tax evasion and bribery, earning an eight-and-a-half-year prison sentence (http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1077346_ecclestones-legal-problems-mount-amid-london-gp-rumors).

Jan.17 (GMM) Bernie Ecclestone's demise may now have begun, as the F1 chief executive stepped down from the sport's board.

The news on Thursday followed hot on the heels of confirmation that Munich prosecutors are indeed sending the 83-year-old Briton's involvement in the Gerhard Gribkowsky bribery scandal to trial this year.

So the F1 holding company, Delta Topco, announced that Ecclestone "will step down as a director with immediate effect" until "the case has been resolved".

The statement said Ecclestone will continue to run F1 "on a day to day basis", but only "subject to increased monitoring and control by the board".

"Mr Ecclestone has agreed to these arrangements," it added.

Germany's SID news agency said the trial will begin in late April, but Red Bull's Dr Helmut Marko said it would not be unusual if a verdict is not known for "three or four years".

Not sick at all, it's an important part of the design process. It will be interesting to see which teams have similar/different weaknesses. I've been leading a team building high-performance model gliders at Carleton the last few years and some of our big crashes, when everything fails as designed/simultaneously, can be just as rewarding as a good flight (even with hundreds of dollars and hours invested, and so long as it's at the end of the competition :) ).

I personally love watching crash test footage.

In the video they have edited out the rig...but you can see its reflection in the body.
I suspect they won't have it for race events...the aero sucks.

There are all sorts of loop holes for these first year engines.
They can ask for more time...its in the best interest of the series to make sure they are in the game.
From what I get...its not the engine as much as the KERS bit.

^ True they can make changes for safety or reliably reasons, but had to submit the homologation engine Friday. Renault tried to extend by two months and even amend homologation but that was voted down by FIA and the teams.

Seems like favorites are Mercedes and Williams, then Ferrari. We'll see what happens with Renault-powered cars next week but Lotus are saying they'll be ready in April (not sure what that means).

Good to see Williams back on form, and it looks like they'll be running new Martini livery, looks great!

If it was just RB, then I'd think the same. But everyone with a Renault powerplant is having issues, so I think they'll take a while to catch up.

Also, is Ferrari better that they seem?
Ferrari tends to do long runs to figure out the car, so they may not be showing their true pace. We'll see with ALO and RAI next week.

So, it is finally underway!

A few observations:

You'll need to turn up the sound on your tv to be able to hear the cars over the commentary.
Changing of the guard? McLaren is back up there now, Williams "could" be one of the faster cars as well Mercedes, Ferrari is fast too, Red Bull pace has dropped a bit, don't look too good for Lotus at all .
Drivers are still not used to the additional energy recovery of the cars, saw quite a few drivers during practice end up drifting into the corner due to the back end stepping out.
Seems like a very different driving style is needed with the new cars. They need to setup for a corner instead of just flicking it in like they used to. An in-car view of a fast lap looks boring in comparison the old way. Smooth is fast.
As far as drivers: Alonso currently faster than Raikkonen, Bottas is not rolling over for Massa, Button showing Magnussen the way, pretty close with Rosberg & Hamilton although I see Hammy getting the edge, Hulk over Perez, not really a surprise there.

http://www.planet-f1.com/driver/18227/9218290/Aus-organisers-claim-breach-of-contract

Despite only recently extending their deal to host the Australian GP, the race's organisers are now crying breach of contract after F1's sound failed to impress.
For the first time this past weekend, fans listened to the new-look Formula One and its quieter 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 engines.
And although the on-track action was worth watching, that didn't stop some from taking to social media to voice their complaints about the sound.
One person who is not happy is Australian GP chairman Ron Walker while Australian Grand Prix Corporation chief executive Andrew Westacott says it could even be deemed a breach of contract.
"One aspect of it was just a little bit duller than it's ever been before and that's part of the mix and the chemistry that they're going to have to get right," Westacott told Fairfax Radio on Monday.
"Ron spoke to (Ecclestone) after the race and said the fans don't like it in the venue.
"We pay for a product, we've got contracts in place, we are looking at those very, very seriously because we reckon there has probably been some breaches."

And how does Mag ruin Raikonnen's race but can get away with a 5-sec penalty DURING his pitstop? Pretty lame, since RAI lost what, a minute at least?
