Schedule is out for Chump 2014!

http://www.chumpcar.com/downloads/2014ChumpCarSchedule.pdf

So, for the Northern Region:

May 3/4, ICAR (Mirabel): 24 Hours!!!!!!
July 5/6, Bogie: Dual 7 Hours
August 16, St. Eustache: 12 Hours
Sept 20, Calabogie: 12 Hours

Damn, no Mosport next year.

Get yer shit boxes ready!!!

Also looks like they are cracking down on the mods a bit more with the new rules. We are going to have to remove our adjustable shocks plus other stuff if we don't want any penalty laps.

We are going to have to remove our adjustable shocks ..

meh there's always a way ;)

mightymousetech
November 5th, 2013, 11:52am
Ya, it is funny, we can get the exact same valving in a non-adjustable shock. Just means we actually have to spend some money on the car. Doh!

Apparently St.Eustach was cancelled last year due to lack of attendance?

The better ones on the list are WG and VIR!

We are thinking about the Glen. Blue Armco FTW! :) Plus, it is nearly the exact same distance as Mosport.

Ha ha, we recently had a meeting about this. I think it might be around the $1500 mark + crash damage. (2 x 2 hr stint)

Dumb question? Why is Chump car so expensive cause I thought it was design to be a cheap race car series? Who pockets the $1,500 x 4 drivers lets say = $6,000 X how many car? 30 maybe = $180,000

Actually the entry fee is about $1000/car.

$1500/driver is what teams would charge for an arrive-and-drive package.

Makes a lot more sense now but it ain’t cheap

How much is it to rent a Formula libre to race?

Makes a lot more sense now but it ain’t cheap

How much is it to rent a Formula libre to race?

actually it's very cheap to run - renting is a bit of a different story, but still.

Considering you get 4+hours of track time for $250/driver? That's cheaper than a lapping day, more seat time, and it's wheel to wheel racing!!!

mightymousetech
November 5th, 2013, 04:09pm
Going rate is usually around $750 for a two hour stint on one race day. That includes entry fees, all consumables like gas, tires, brakes, getting the car to the track, etc etc etc. that is just show up with your gear and drive.

Go to a regional race, and you are paying double to triple that for 45-60 mins of racing, and quite often you have to supply your own tires.

The cheapest part of any racing is the car.

Has the car owner.

All you guys split cost evenly on car repair, maintenance, consumables and mods I guess

We have 6 drivers, all costs split evenly. This year, it cost us each $680-750 per weekend.

yup, exactly. And building a chump car is WAY cheaper than any other race car. You can build a good, competitive chump car for $5k-$8k, no problem.

mightymousetech
November 6th, 2013, 12:07pm
And do double duty with regional racing LOL. Couple of the Chump cars were former Regional racers, GT5, but can still do both.

Gonna put some serious thought to it in the spring...may just offload my bike, get into a racecar, and then fix up my old bike to have 2 wheels again (ala mikeman). It'd be nice to have less concern over putting my DD into a wall :P

Not sure about Chump this year though - still working out the "why do you do such dangerous things" issues with the support crew at home :P

February 8th, 2014, 11:08pm
The battles were absolutely insane. 4 wide in some crazy high speed corners. Everyone fighting for every inch every second. There is one line through the esses, the fast guys just cut through the grass to get around slower guys. Carl from perry said he had never seen anything like it before. Crazy.

So our car blew a turbo in the first 14 minutes. Sweet lol... TDI with no turbo, couldn't even keep up to the pack in full course yellow Baha. So we packed it in with no spare to fix. All of a sudden I get offered a drive in bogie men 2... Awesome! Oops car is missing, no radio contact, all of a sudden radio contact. Car died, he in the infield on the far side of the track.. In the campground Lololol jump in the duelly, let go so some fishin! Pick up the car, while checking more insane trackside action. Turns out ecu is done... Crap no spare. Off to the junk yard to find one. My ride decided now is a good time to pack it in especially since my offered ride won't be up and running again... WRONG! Ecu found and the car goes back out! But then they fry the alternator and lose the battery. Crap! Ok change that out, up and running stronger than ever! Unfortunately I was hours out of town by that time... Overall, epic journey. Would have loved to get some serious racing done but hey sometimes tings just don't go dat way. That's rassin!

Will have to check what is going on over there.

We are still running around 13th. Had an emergency pit stop 30 mins in when our lead driver started to throw up. Threw our fuel stops out the window. I did the second stint, got down to the 34's and up to 11th from 30 something. Fell waaaay back due to the first stop. Driver pulled in and no one was ready.

Wing and the Trunk Monkeys seized a motor during the first stint. They still don't know what happened.

Mandatory driver changes every 2 hours. If refuelling, minimum 5 min stop. Fuel stops make a bigger difference than lap times. Lots of position changes with the fuel stops.

Jamie started to lose 3rd during stint #2 today, went totally within about 3 laps of Shawn getting in for stint #3. When it went it took everything but 4th with it. The guys did a hell of a job though, still managed to place 4th despite only running in 4th gear for the last 3.5 or 4 hours. We had to push the sumbitch to get it up to speed in the pits, no way it could get started again by itself if they stopped.

They should have the old trans out and the spare going in by now for tomorrow.

Ya, both Shawn and Chris managed 2:37's in the last couple hours. Oh, when the car came in at the end of the race the front drivers side was corded on the outer edge as well. They chewed the shit outta that tire.

Grids are random IIRC, just line up and they drop the green at some point in the pack.

Thanks for all the support guys! Pretty awesome reading through all this today seeing that you guys were following us. What an awesome weekend it was. Had transmission problems on saturday, but that was really our only hiccup. The car ran great on sunday, and we did what we had to do, making up about 1.5 seconds a lap on Mopar to make back our penalty laps. Had to change the front left twice during the race. What a killer. Pit stops went great, and we were able to stay reliable and consistent. Couldn't have asked for better results!!

Great to see you guys out there 613, and Wayne's team seemed to be going pretty good too!

Echoing what Chris said - it's awesome to have all the background support :) so awesome... Yeah Saturday was a bit of a boring drive being stuck in 4th gear for 3 hours but happy we were able to manage it. Tranny #2 for the weekend was smooth as butter Sunday morning, but when Jamie got in for the last stint it started going really bad. He was able to milk it and keep shifting though- only really need 3rd and 4th at CMP. Also, he built us a kick-ass radio system that worked EVERYWHERE on the track - so nice to be able to talk to the driver/crew. Huge thanks to Pat for coming to help out on Saturday. We also figured out a new fuelling system and it worked great- 3mins to full instead of 4.5 :)

Email Tech and ask if you can make a frame substitution since a replacement isn't available. Ask if there is a $0 repair option. If the repair doesn't give you an advantage than they might let you off the hook for materials, they are pretty reasonable guys. Just make sure it ends up in your log book!

I'm convinced he never put water in. He said he put some in and ran it until the gauge came up to temp and called it a day. This was AFTER he had done a few test days with the car. Not sure why he drained the rad after the test days, the point of testing is to find those things not change it after.

We put 5+ litres into the rad after it came off track, me thinks it had some water but not nearly enough.

A lot of people don`t have the either the time or know how (or both) to buy and build a car. For all the time you guys have put into your team, plus the space and tools for the operation (and you guys havent even broken anything yet!) damn right selling seats is a business.

Trading time and knowledge for money. Simple formula.

I'm not saying you're overcharging or anything as I know that's pretty much the going rate. But I still don't get it...

I'd rather buy into a team and possibly get one race out of it with my team (and/or sell everything off afterwards and get most of it back) vs. rent a seat for $1400 and possibly get a few good hours, yet have nothing to show for it afterwards.

I guess that explains why so many chump cars are for sale? people build'em, race and move on because difficult or got their t-shirts...

building the car once is one thing. maintaining it to have a successful season is another. The reality is that chump car is not much less expensive on consumables that any other race series - sometimes more.

Fuel: pretty much the same.
Tires: same, if not worse: since you can't optimise the alignment without incurring penalties, you go through tires like crazy
bushings, suspension, wheel bearings: these wear out much "faster," if you're looking at it as a per-season basis: I race at chump is like a full season of GT racing!!!

just to put it in perspective: Our consumables at the CMP weekend (double 7hr race) were over $4k. this includes gas, tires, registration, oil.

it adds up fast!

And no, you can't treat renting out rides as a business. You will fail. You can only treat it as offsetting some of the costs, in order to make it more affordable.

It helps they got a great package deal to start off with, they might have enough tires for the 12 hour race. http://forum.chumpcar.com/index.php?/topic/10846-fs-limerock-entry-neon-roller-package-or-separate-yellow-pit-bunny-extra/ But right now they have a non running car with 0 races completed. Even Mighty mouse's car didn't cost much to get it going off the ground either.

Our car can be a top five car, I was running with the leaders most of the weekend, just need some faster drivers. ;)Our car is FAAAAAARRRRR from costing that much. Original car, free. Home built cage, $200. Used JDM motor, $600, header, intake and coilovers off kijiji $200, brake pads (http://motors.shop.ebay.com/Car-Truck-Parts-/6030/i.html?_nkw=Brake+Pads), wheels and tiresand a healthy dose of sawzall.

I've made a budget in the past and have seen what Glen,Kees,Harrison are putting into each weekend for a top 5 car and the money is being spent. Always looked like regional racing in a ugly car to me.

I hope you guys do well at bogie, I'm in for a 250$ neon seat when you guys go to watkins glen in November. :)

We have zero expectations. I'm pretty sure we're on the same page as the car will be ready when it's ready. We'll race it the way it is once it runs. Might be the first and last race or might just be the beginning. Pretty much a "get the feel for it" project. I'm going to drive at %50 to try and leave some car for the next session. So should be under $1000 plus travel expenses. I'm ok if I only get one race it of it. I told myself I'm not getting sucked into a chump vortex.

I see 613 is in 5th place where is Metric homes? A few laps down I assume based on points.

Clutches don't work well when the disk is in backwards, or so I hear, maybe....

Greg just got here with the new one.

We are running strong in 4th!

hope it wasn't in backwards... yikes.

#613 is looking solid, although 10 laps down

Given 1 minute laps, being 10 laps down isn't that much.

Is it raining? Lap times have settled about 10 secs above the "best times".

Shawn called every cdn tire and parts store in the area, nothing. Looked like we were packing it in. I think I called you jokingly about a clutch, but I didn't know the application.
Did I say BMW application? lol

Shawn eventually called Mike, as he was on his way to lachute to source an used disk from a friend. My phone rings at the track and Shawn says mike got us a new clutch at a warehouse in MTL. AS IF! You're incredible. Thanks so much Mike.

But we've got 50min to get there in MTL traffic!! Stole Geoffs truck and only slowed down for the photo radar part of the hwy. Chris and I made it with 5 minutes to spare and raced back to the track.

The boys put your clutch in the car and we were on our way. Chris went out and ran about 30min ?, got flagged because the exhaust was hanging too low, so when he came in he decided he had enough and told me to jump in the car. whoa, I wasn't even suited up! so much more to say, but so tired. Thanks again Mike.

soaked is an understatement- still wet.

What a crazy race. Racing at night, and monsoon rain. Could only see out a 2 foot square of the windshield. Could not see turn in points, braking points. Several cars even did several laps after checker flag was being thrown, assuming because they could not even see the flags.

Surprisingly, after 12 hours, every single car that started, finished the race.

We did get a special trophy that Sal called the "Spin Cycle" award. He ran out if ink writing "613" down so many times in his incident report book.

Can't wait to see more of Andy's pics.

Racing fwd in the rain was different, had a blast. My best in the rain with little to no brakes was 1:18. I got black flag for pulling a Senna.
