Looking forward to this season. Especially to see what Hamilton can do at Mercedes.

Here's the new regulations for 2013...

2013 season changes

DRS use
For safety reasons, in 2013 drivers are only be able to utilise the Drag Reduction System (DRS) overtaking aid within the designated DRS zones during practice and qualifying. Previously drivers had been free to deploy the system as they pleased in these sessions.

Active double-DRS systems outlawed
In 2012 Mercedes developed a clever concept whereby air was channelled through an opening in the rear-wing endplate when DRS was activated and then fed through the car to help stall the front wing. For 2013 active drag reducing systems involving the DRS, such as this, have been banned.

Stepped noses
Teams have the option of tidying up the aesthetics of their cars in 2013 with the introduction of new regulations aimed at improving the look of ‘ugly’ stepped noses first seen in 2012. A small piece of laminate - nicknamed a ‘modesty' or 'vanity' panel - may now be used to smooth the nose section.

Crash testing
To make F1 cars ever safer, tougher new tests on roll structures and the survival cell have been introduced for 2013. Furthermore, every chassis that a team produces, as opposed to just one, will now be subject to a static load test of the survival cell.

Curfews
The team personnel curfew - which prevents team members from being in the paddock during specified periods - has been extended from six to eight hours on Thursday nights for 2013. The number of exceptions allowed during a season has also been reduced from four to two.

Front wing tests
For 2013 front wing deflection tests will be more stringent to lessen the possibility of flexible bodywork being used to enhance aerodynamic performance.

Minimum weight
The minimum weight of the car and driver has been increased from 640kg to 642kg to compensate for the slightly increased weight of Pirelli's 2013 tyres. The mandatory weight distribution has also been adjusted accordingly.

Force majeure
The ‘force majeure’ allowance relating to when a car stops on the track during qualifying has been deleted from the regulations. For 2013 any car that stops on the track must have enough fuel for the mandatory one-litre minimum sample plus an additional amount proportional to the amount of fuel that would have been used in returning to the pits (determined by the FIA).

Qualifying
Not an actual regulation change, but as the official 2013 entry list comprises 22 cars - two fewer than in 2012 - six cars rather than seven will now be eliminated at the end of both Q1 and Q2.

Championship entry fees
Championship entry fees have been revised. Red Bull, as constructors’ champions, were required to pay US$500,000 plus US$6000 for each point gained in the 2012 World Constructors’ Championship to enter the 2013 championship. Every other team was required to pay a basic fee of US$500,000 plus US$5000 for each point scored in 2012.

lol, srsly, bogie is a bargain now.

but I got lost on the fee structure. The best teams pay more than the worst teams? is that a profit sharing technique?

tellum
January 8th, 2013, 01:29pm
Ya, seemed odd, but when you think about it, they should have more money, so why not... profit sharing at work.

Yeah confusing. I thought it was a benefit to win? They get more sponsorship monies for sure.

Can't wait. In 2012 in Mtl I was 3rd row in front of the pits on the start. Great seats. Wanted to change and this year and we are 7th row (we didn't reniew right away..) in the Senna corner. Should see more action that's for sure.

I have a love / hate thing for Bernie E.

But F1 might not be what is is today without him . . .

I wanna be an F1 pilot when I grow up!

Here's a pic of yours truly leading the pack in a Formula Silverstone rent-a-ride (think Formula Ford), at Silverstone in October 2010:

I hope Hamilton will learn how to lose and keep focus with Mercedes. Im not a huge fan of the guy but I think this move will mature him as a driver. I will predict Perez will lose by taking too many unrewarding risks. Also very curious to see what Pirelli are doing with their tires.

I argued on the Suby board that it seems ridiculous that the driver can’t see the road and this is probably because the guy driving this Lotus is a test Pilot for Pirelli and that its not is car. I would think they would mould a seat in which the height would put the drivers eyes at the perfect height to see the road. I mean there is no way a F1 driver does not see the road, right?

we have formula drivers here?

wing
January 21st, 2013, 08:57pm
I've driven some formula cars, you can see the road. I've never driven a F1 car obviously. It seems to me in that video the camera is at the bottom of the helmet not at eye level or top.

I think it's a camera thing. From what I remember I could see the top of the tires just like in that video but I could easily see the road.

EDIT: but F1 driver's do sit even lower than other formula cars. I really think it's a camera thing because you look far down the road, you can see it in real life.

I like that you can see the mirrors, I always wondered what they see and how they avoid each other. Looks like the mirrors work better than I thought they did.

Mario
January 21st, 2013, 09:29pm
You did like me the first time I watch it. You didn’t look at the very end. Look at the GoPro

I can’t imagine they can’t see the road! That would be impossible right?

wing
January 21st, 2013, 09:34pm
Yeah but I think the camera eye is just not the same as your human eye.

There are some parts he can see no problem, other parts he can't..

figo
January 21st, 2013, 10:09pm
They are tucked in as much as possible. You don't want to fuck with aero at 320 kph because of your fat head. Usually f1 driver's eyes are just above the steering wheel. They can see their revs, time easily on their displays. From what I remember in interviews is that they can see the top of the wheel hit the apex. In this video, it seems that the camera is tilted down just a bit but it does seem to be at the right height.

I have never driven an f1, only close I did is sit in a Ferrari 312.

figo
January 21st, 2013, 10:14pm
You can also consider that when he brakes, the helmets moves forward and camera down but you would look up while the camera is fixed on the helmet. Same on turns, the camera doesn't follow where he's looking.

As an open wheeler...that is batshit mental. I drove an F1600 (~150 hp, no aero) at the end of last season...I was lucky I could get to about 75% of its capability. Stuff happens really fast. I can't imagine driving F1...too mental.

It's impressive to see their reaction times. Fernando and Kimi are on top of my list for that (current drivers). I remember this year, I think HAM was getting out of pit lane and Kimi adjusted his cart within a blink of an eye to avoid a collision. Very mental, I'll try to find a clip.

Stuff happens really fast. I can't imagine driving F1...too mental.

It took adjusting going to a 1000cc bike on the track. The straights feel so goddamn SHORT. And then you're going so much faster into the braking zones.. The guys that wring those bikes close to the machine's capability are totally on another level.
I can't imagine an F1, not even close, especially judging how quickly it all goes very wrong when I'm playing F1 2010 on PS3 ..

Ecclestone admitted, however, that the race was unlikely to be added to the calendar as Formula 1 teams were not keen to have an extra GP.

:(

I've been to Estoril track and the new one in the Algarve. Estoril track looks like it wouldn't be up to today's standards, but I love the little city and Cascais. The Algarve looks like a great F1 venue and Portimao and Lagos could hold a race weekend. I stayed at Praia de Rocha when I was in the Algarve region and it's all little beach towns (tourist).

I've been to the karting place right beside, fun track fast karts and had great battles with other drivers. Im glad I was with a group that actually knew how to race and were big Formula 1 fans. It makes it better when people race with respect and can drive in traffic without crashing into one another like drunk bachelor parties lol not saying there wasn't rubbing but no one there was taking you out.

I was sitting there and holding on hoping that Kimi does win the race, hoping that Alonso doesn't catch up, because Alonso did seem quite quick too. F1 would do well to get rid of the multirace engine rules. Let em race boys ! Post race was the most entertaining. So what does 'Multi 21' mean ?? "yah multi 21 ! "

The cars slowing down to preserve engines etc is dumb, same deal with hammy and rosberg.

I was excited to see Alonso go for another lap... and then not so much. So early in the wet to dry couldve/wouldve been a decent strategy.

Sure, racers are racers, but one disobeyed team orders and one didn't. Dick move that could have cost the team all the points.

The best thing they could do is just get rid of team orders.

Yeah, all racers have that "edge" to them, that willingness to say screw this, we're racing.
But this is not amateur sports, this is also a business.

I give credit to Rosberg for staying put. Vettel's a dick.

F1 is more "entertaining" these days, but also more artificial. Fast-wearing tires, saving the engines... I'm surprised they haven't brought back refuelling for that extra variable.

Let's just race dammit.

Awesome article.

Still seems like cranky pants to me. RBR has said that their racers can race each other...then they throw down team orders.
Vettel is ruthless...he needs to win. Its something I don't understand...but champions all seem to have it.
He made a decision (despite orders), he won...seems like the right decision.
Had he crashed or took out both cars...would be a different story.

Now he is leading in points.
If he swallowed second...he'd be tied with Webber. Not sure that he made that calculation in the car...but maybe he did.

Taken From Facebook’s Formula One post:

Red Bull punish Vettel by demoting him to Toro Rosso for Chinese GP

The aftermath of the Multi 21 team orders saga continues to rage, and today it has emerged that Red Bull have mandated that their errant world champion Sebastian Vettel will be ‘punished’ for his disobedience in Malaysia and demoted to the Toro Rosso team for the Chinese Grand Prix.

Meanwhile, Toro Rosso driver Daniel Ricciardo will be promoted to Vettel’s Red Bull RB9 seat for the race in Shanghai.

Ricciardo will join fellow Australian Mark Webber in the team’s line-up, an all Aussie affair for the Chinese Grand Prix.

“The reason for this action is a result of Sebastian’s disobedience and ignoring the team’s Multi 21 call to hold station during the Malaysian Grand Prix. This measure by the team shows our resolve in dealing with the champion’s ill discipline on that day.”

“At the same time we are very proud to have two Australian drivers in the line-up of our main Red Bull team for the first time ever, with Daniel Ricciardo joining Mark Webber in the team for the occasion of the race in China.” - Red Bull Boss.

Something is up with the RBR cars.
And I think they are hoping that the softs degrade immediately.

Nice to see Hamilton up front again. Makes his choice of jumping ship seem like the smart move.
Kimi showing great pace too.
Great qualy from Ricciardo too, and the Bianchi kid is one to watch.

April 13th, 2013, 02:46pm
Well after watching the practice sessions apparently these soft ties lose 1/2 second after one lap. Then over a second a lap drop after that.

They suck. So it could work for RB as they may have to pit after 3-5 laps full of fuel.

Should be interesting

Fuckin' Pirelli. 6 laps on a tire? Dumb. Although it looked like Vettel could've pulled a few more out of his set at the end.

Gojira
April 15th, 2013, 09:48am
Not Pirelli's fault. When they came to F1 it was requested by F1 (Bernie Ecclestone) that a tire be developed that allows for more pit stops since refueling was banned for safety reasons. In fact, Pirelli bitched about being forced to build what the public may see as a crappier tire since it would be a PR nightmare for outsiders to think Pirellis can't stand up to what Bridgestone and Michelin had provided in the past.

1Morelap
April 15th, 2013, 11:42am
tires that go off in speed make for good racing at any level. don't change that!

Mario
April 15th, 2013, 12:23pm
Perez is disappointing. Certainly not helping to push Button the way Hamilton did. Massa is falling behind again IMO. The soft tires were designed for qualifying then needs to be changed after 5 laps or so, right? That's usually the best place to use them since they need to use one set per race. I find it a bit weird to see guys going for a pit stop 5 laps before the finish but makes for very interesting finish like this last race. One lap the tires would've been done but Vettel would have been on the podium.

Robin2
April 15th, 2013, 02:13pm
So far, good season.... no real winner overall. much more closer so far at the top.

ferrari is much more consitent and Massa is matching Alonso a lot more. Much better than last year when there was a lot of talk to changing Massa for another driver.

mercedes is nice surprise. To be somewhat up there now is what they should have been last year. Mclaren is simply disappointing. they're struggling. Williams are basically a no-show.... no clue what they did but they went in the wrong direction. Too bad cause I like them and could show the smaller teams (caterham, murrissia) what they could be.... vs the bottom feeders.

Lotus is doing much better and fighting again... good to see that.. especially with kimi.

if it keeps up, it might be a 3-4 driver race for driver's championship.

It is a bunch of bitching that goes on regardless what happens with tires, but you can clearly see and hear from the radio that they cant drive the cars to what they are supposed to be driven at. They shouldn't have dicked around the the compounds and kept them the same as last year.

Team would have a better understanding of the tires, and I would say it was maybe the best year of racing recently

That story is all based on speculation, nothing confirmed.

Sure, but Andrew Benson is a proper journalist and not just a blogger, doesn't print anything without a credible source.

And confirmed. Honda back in 2015. Awesome.

Big FUCK TO YOU from Ferrari to RBR. Good. Lotus pretty much said the same thing, calling them short term memory pussies.

Yeah saw that on Planet F1. Well written by them. RBR and Vettel are whiners when things don't go their way.

love jev's tribute helmet to fellow frenchmen francois cevert... in a season where team loyalty and driver respect should be reminded, maybe the young guys will remind themselves with all the new safety f1 brought, they are not invicible.

no one should forget how great cevert was as a competitive driver and teamate.

Good for Nico, but don't know, pretty boring. I think the best of Monaco is behind it.

Feel bad for Kimi. Perez was way too aggressive and ended up reckless. He nearly took out Alonso too. Apparently Kimi said "someone should punch him in the face" so yeah he was pissed.

This whole secrat Mercedes tire test is going to get messy I think

haha yeah. I think Ferrari did the same trick earlier this year too.

I’m happy for Rosberg though, he’s a true gentlemen racer on and off the track. He really deserves this. I think he’s very talented and is very consistent driver. I like him. He truly belongs with the royalty of Monaco. I predict great things for him.

Anyone remember Maria de Villota? She crashed last year in a test drive and lost her eye? Well, here's her helmet.

Shawn issues for the Yellow E46 in free practice ?

June 8th, 2013, 06:11pm
Yup- our throttle cable was frayed and got stuck full-throttle a couple times (hence the massive lock ups), and then the ignition switch failed so the car turned off and wouldn't restart. Both minor issues that were resolved for qualifying.

Then, we lost 2nd gear in the tranny in qualifying. Got that changed yesterday evening and we were good to go today. The weather sucked for the race though and we made a gamble hoping for a dry track. Still finished, but nowhere near where the car/driver are capable of. Tomorrow is a new day! Looking forward to it and its nice to not have anything to do tonight :)

Nice. How is the Blanchet civic running lol.

You guys changed the tranny or rebuilt it? Lots of spares with you guys I guess!

June 9th, 2013, 10:29am
We had a spare.

Blanchet ran ok I think... Sharpe finished 3rd yesterday and 2nd (?) today.

We managed to come back from p7 to finish 2nd. Super happy, although it was mostly due to other teams bad luck. We had 4th pretty solid and then 2nd and 3rd blew :(.

We'll take it though!
