From what I can tell...most of the teams aren't showing all their cards. I think some of that stuff on the RB8 is for disinformation.
My projection: cars will be more equal, Hamilton will shine, if the Ferrari is halfway decent- Alonso will be the man.

I disagree, I like the MP4-27, much better looking, no goofy nose; http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2012/02/01/mclaren-mp4-27-2012-f1-car-pictures/

Raikkonen is at the top, and they haven't been on track in 3 hours.

lulz...McLaren sandbagging like Red Bull...having them show up together like that on the time sheet. Nobody will know anything for sure until Q3.
I'm hoping that Alonso's been screwing with everyone and they actually have a killer car. (unlikely).
Australia is about getting the car to the end...and figuring out what needs to be overhauled before the season moves back to Europe.

I'm looking forward to see what the Saubers can do, good stuff here about those cars; http://scarbsf1.wordpress.com/2012/03/13/analysis-sauber-c31/

And the new Merc F-Duct; http://scarbsf1.wordpress.com/2012/03/14/mercedes-f-duct-front-wing-operated-by-the-rear-wing-drs/
If they were playing with something like this last year, it may explain some of their straight line speed.

They should replace Massa with Perez. I don't there is any other top team with such with such a variance between drivers in qualy and race. 1st and 15th? Something is wrong here.

They even drive on the marbles at the end to pick some up on the tires, stuff like webber and alonso hitching a ride because they need a minimum fuel sample for testing after the race etc.. lots of rules and regulations, it is formula racing after all.

Great race, that battle for 2nd with 7-8 cars was fun, my girl even had a few times at the edge of her seat cheering at the tv lol. Im happy for Nico :) and Mercedes beside their pit fuck up.

I think the tire issue is the big wildcard. It seems they just can't predict how the tires will last...Vettel dropped a bunch of places, just because he went one lap too many.
Otherwise...crazy race.

And Kimi lost nearly 10 spots within one lap from second place.
I think it's good. Gamble and try to stretch the tires, you lose.

agreed. Especially because it isn't a specific number of laps, it's based on how you treat your tires too, so it adds a whole other dimension that changes based on driver and driving style.

Then Button got borked in qualifying when the air temp fell 2 degrees. So you have to account for the vagaries of the weather too.
That long straight at Shanghai must really be a nightmare for the engineers...brakes cool off, I'll bet the tires change temp as well...then you need to do the hardest braking and need all the traction to make the turn.

I was surprised in qualifying and loved the race, everyone had some very nice overtaking and great efforts. I'm happy for Pastor, Fernando and kobayashi, a little disappointed for Webber. Iceman impressed me and Vettel. Hamilton did well for starting at the back of the grid. All in all every team showed they were hungry to be on the podium.

Well, they were protecting their position and trying to overtake in the end of a monaco race with marble everywhere and no room for error... all with the rain started to come in some spots. Alonso wanted the points to stay ahead of vettel so he wasn't pushing anything stupid. No one wanted to end up in the wall with 0 points, so everyone I think was waiting for someone to fuck up in the rain but at the same time realized that someone was on them thinking the same.

it was tight for that train of leaders to pass on the blue flags, the slower cars did well to let them by.

"I think these people grew up without ever hearing their parents ever tell them, 'No.' So that's what you see in the streets now," he told reporters Thursday night.

"It's becoming a little bit ridiculous," he said. "They spoke, we heard, and now it's time to go back to school."

Hamilton drove well, and pushed hard when it counted but overtaking Seb and Alonso wasn't sometime incredible... they both didn't even defend, they knew Lewis was on his way and couldn't do anything about it but watched him go by. Lewis knew this and only passed them in a safe zone without risking anything. You could see Alonso slidding everywhere. Same with Perez and Grosjean, great drive, great strategy.

You can't really say that when there are too many factors to think about. When they do their pitstops, how many pit stops, which tires and when to put them on depends on track temp traffic etc, traffic, when you come out of pits, if you follow someone and can't pass you are always in turbulant air and no clean air using your tires more and on a track like montreal your fronts and rears will wear away fast, how hard and how long drivers push or drives smooth to make tires last... Top 10 are 25 seconds apart, thats just an extra stop. If teams gamble on tires like it happen they focus on points, Vettel came in to try and get more grip to pass Fernando for drivers points.

Grosjean and Perez were probably the most impressive, they were on the same tires as Vettle and Alonso and they were flying!

Perez started on the soft and ended the race on the super soft. He did 30 laps on his SS tires! That was really amazing. Perez and Grosjean did a amazing job at tire management.

I guess what did Alonso and Vettle in was that they were trying to stay with Hamilton. Ferrari and Redbull must have thought that Hamilton was also going to one stop the race, but he never intended to. So they were forced to stay with him and that killed their chances of their tires making it to the end. But losing 4 seconds a lap, oh my, I would have been very tempted to stop for tires the moment Hamilton passed me if I was Alonso. He could have kept his podium position. Such a short pit lane, you only lose 14 seconds. The other two teams should have responded immediately.

...Such a short pit lane, you only lose 14 seconds. The other two teams should have responded immediately.

how do you get 14secs?

pit in mtl is 21-22 secs, actually in the box for 3-4seconds...

Vettel went in with ~13 laps I think left, gain about 4 secs a lap... let's say Alonso can gain 4 secs/lap with fresh tires, that's 5.5 laps to catch up and break even on the pit stop (4x5=20secs), not counting the strecht between pit entry and exit (mtl is pretty much a straight in front of pit lane).

I knew Seb and Fernando wouldn't be able to keep up with Lewis but I was sure if Fernando went in pits Seb would of followed (or vice versa) but I guess Ferrari decided to stay out. Fernando finished 5 secs behind Vettel, maybe if Ferrari would of switched tires the lap after RBR did it could of been close but that all depends in what traffic you end up after the pit stop. In the end, Fernando is lucky to keep his 4th place points because Nico was right behind him.

Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel has been handed a 20-second time penalty by the stewards in Germany for his pass on McLaren’s Jenson Button during the closing stages of Sunday’s race. Vettel had finished the Hockenheim event in second, but the addition of the penalty leaves him fifth in the results.

The stewards decided the German gained an advantage after leaving the track at the exit of the hairpin as he attempted to overtake Button on Lap 66. They elected to give him a drive-through penalty, which when imposed after the race means 20 seconds is added to the penalised driver’s finishing time.

As a result of Vettel’s penalty, Button is promoted to second in the results. Lotus’s Kimi Raikkonen moves up into third and Sauber’s Kamui Kobayashi takes fourth.

Do not agree. Vettel made a outside move, but it was a hairpin and Button had the inside line cleanly. Plus, of all the complicated F1 rules, the not leaving the track for an advantage one is the most straight forward.
If Vettel was thinking, he would have conceded the spot, and probably passed him easily at the next corner. He knew Button's tires were kaput.

And again. Sneaky sneaky RBR.
Teams are only supposed to be able to make suspension changes with the use of tools. RBR's suspension can be altered with two fingers...
So "theoretically" they could easily hide changes between qualy and race to optimize both...

VW may become Toro Rosso engine supplier in 2014, with a look to possibly having a factory team in the next 5 years. Nice!

so cool.

Would have loved to hear that sound in the tunnel - probably ear-drum shattering.

Used to love revving my bike in the La Fontaine Tunnel in montreal with the Yoshimura pipe on it... such a sweet sound.

best wake up call ever, very jealous of DC doing this, even if the tires and brakes are cold and there's no turns, I would do this all day and night

just a little over a week until SPA !

Vid not working anymore.

But yeah, Maldo for sure jumped. I played it in Slo-Mo on PVR and was pretty obvious.
Sucks that Grosjean took out the key players, but good dominance by Button.
Lap 34 & 35 was great.

Good for Jenson. Similar setup for Monza next week...should be great. Another classic track.
Impressed by Vettel and Kimi. Kimi's fight with Schumi was fantastic. Nutso pass on Eau rouge.
I think Grosjean needs a suspension. That was reckless.

I still cannot stand Maldonado, SkyF1 has a love affair with him because he's with Williams. I'm happy to see this though;

Double penalty for Maldonado after jump start and crash (http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2012/09/02/double-penalty-maldonado-jump-start-crash/) 2012 Belgian Grand Prix September 2, 2012 at 4:59 pm by Keith Collantine (http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/members/keithcollantine/)

Pastor Maldonado (http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/pastor-maldonado/) will lose ten places on the grid at the Italian Grand Prix.

The Williams (http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/f1-information/f1-teams/williams/) driver was handed two five-placed penalties following the Belgian Grand Prix.
They were for jumping the start and causing a collision with Timo Glock (http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/timo-glock/) at the restart which led to Maldonado’s retirement.
Maldonado received a total of three penalties during the race weekend having been docked three places on the grid for impending Nico Hulkenberg (http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/nico-hulkenberg/) during qualifying.

But Ron Dennis doesn't like games like that so might backfire. Would be awesome to see Kimi back at McLaren.

May be a threat to McLaren to sweeten his contract.
Mercedes doesn't have a competitive car...and next year's is not likely to be any better.
So other than cash...there isn't a big motivation to move.

Should be an interesting race tomorrow. Ferrari needs Massa to get in 1st and hold the lead but not likely to happen with Hammy and Bouton ahead.

Great race. Good to see Alonso working his way up the grid. Good strategy by Sauber to get Perez up front, good drive from him.
Odd to see Button, Vettel and Webber drop out.

ALO still 37 points up on Hammy with Raikonnen only 1 point behind him. Gonna be interesting to see how it all plays out in the next 7 races.

Definitely a long way to go in the championship. It is Ferarri's to lose right now though.
