Not sure if this is "Professional Motorsports", but there's some carnage at Targa already.

What's hard to see is what the Z car hits... A parked (Probably broken tranny) STI just around the blind corner. Why nobody waived a caution flag is beyond me!

there ya go

Daniel Williams Jr. and navigator Doug Martin literally blew a gasket in Southern Harbour, a tough start for the spectacularly prepared Subaru STI. “Williams and Martin did everything right” says Targa Newfoundland President Robert Giannou. “They had their safety triangles in place, they weren’t in the vehicle, and their car was well off the road.”
Unfortunately, the STI was struck by another car. Father and son Mark and Darian Kostick from Alberta hit a guardrail and subsequently Williams’ car. Mark was taken to hospital for observation.

Whoat that's nuts... glad everyone is ok.

Emil went off in practice too - luckily he got the car all fixed up and is still going!

Can this be done on the cheap? (FFR)

1Morelap
September 14th, 2011, 08:59am
$15k is the cheapest realistic budget. and 5k of that is just entry fee. If you think a lapping day is expensive... this is only 5 days of driving.

however, by all accounts it's still worth every penny.

Yeah, need sponsors.

gchislett
September 14th, 2011, 09:20am
A large part of the expense is getting there and accommodations. So, it's a lot cheaper for Newfoundlanders and they can stay with people they know along the route. Consider the cost of getting at least 5 people there/back (5000 kms) towing a car and putting everyone up in hotels for 10 days or more. That's at least $1500 in gas and $2500 in hotels on top of the $5000 entry and owning a completely disposable car.

It'd be fun though!

I have enough family all over the island...food and accommodations wouldn't be a problem. Everyone would need to prepare themselves for a dose of culture though...

Cripes, you make it sound like Newfoundland is on another planet and requires NASA-like training before setting foot. You're not that special. :P

Up until this February I had planned on co-driving with him. Then my engine ended up costing me much more than I had planned, and Emil's business plan was a bit different than I expected so I had to decline.

Looks like he's still in the running though - the crash didn't take him out completely!

Targa is definitely still on my bucket list. I won't be able to again next year, but hopefully before I'm 30!

A hurricane warning has been issued for Newfoundland's east coast as Hurricane Maria has picked up speed and power as it churns its way north.

September 16, 2011 - This stage looks even narrower as you're driving it.
If you're looking for pictures of the marine Enzo, check out Gordon Sleigh's (http://www.gordonsleigh.com/v/Motorsports/Targa/Thursday/) gallery. He managed to catch it going in and being recovered. Lots of other great shots of the cars racing as well.
There was an injured spectator in one of the incidents yesterday. I don't know any details, but we're all hoping it's minor. Nobody wants this to happen, and there is a veritable army of volunteers to make the course as safe as possible. It's the first spectator injury in the event's 10 year anniversary.

September 14, 2011 - The cars are starting to show signs of wear.
This Porsche Turbo, for example, took a short swim in shallow water and tangled with a boulder on the way. A lot of work overnight and it was back up and running the next day, although the aerodynamics may not be as Stuttgart intended. Another Porsche appears to have one fender made primarily of duct tape, and we've dodged the odd MINI part lying in the road. It's a tough race, and it's going to get tougher tomorrow.
A number of cars are out due to engine problems, including a very well-driven Civic that was our direct competition as well as a truly terrifying Mustang.
