View Full Version : Any last minute hints/tips/tricks before I hit the track tomorrow?

So....am heading to CMP for the day tomorrow ... to hopefully get "signed off" to run solo. My goal is to run the gentleman's race on the 28th....

Any hints/tips/tricks/words of wisdom from the grizzled veterans?

I already got the "don't lift in blind corners"

Yeah dude, just soak it all in, don't worry about "Am I fast?", "Am I holding people up?".

We all went through the anxious jitters, I like it, makes you feel alive :)

Remember you have to drive the car home when you're done. That's what I keep paramount in my mind when lapping.

Enjoy yourself! Basics: Brake in a straight line, downshift during braking, once you enter a corner maintain that speed until you start to accelerate after the apex. Don't worry about being fast, worry about learning the line and driving within your limits. Speed is a by-product of experience, knowledge and comfort. Nobody starts with all 3.

Wow....fuckn' tired. Day is done. 7 x 30 minute lapping sessions, plus went out with my instructor for 3 sessions so the middle part of the day was back to back to back. Booked Sunday while I was there to get more seat time and figure out how to use the entire track properly. And, see you on the 28th for the Gentleman's race. :-) I'll be the one covering the back of the pack.

Was a sponge, got wet, started the day driving in the rain, dried up for the afternoon so I got a chance to drive the track in the best and worst conditions.

Hardest part was truly disconnecting where I was looking and where I was steering - looking into the corners and visualizing where I was gonna go. I thought I was ok at that but was definitely not. My instructor said that my motorcycle days contributed to that....

Then it was just brake, set wheel to settle car and transfer weight, turn in, gas out of apex, repeat over and over again.

The tranny took a giant shit in the first car I had (shifting forks - wouldnt go into first, third without making a racket). Settled on #61.

nice man other then the car troubles... but how was the experience im kinda tempted to try the mustang days now

Jethro
July 6th, 2011, 08:56pm
The car troubles weren't really an issue. Had issue - got into new car in about 10 minutes. Shit happens....

The experience was awesome. Learned a huge amount in a very short period of time. Raised my "holy fuck" threshold a bit today. My instructor (Rowan) was excellent. He broke things down for me, gave me constructive criticism on what I was doing wrong, and when he figured out that I didn't need any coaching he shut up and let me drive, then when he figured out that he could push me he did just that. On my last session I was lapping other cars and was getting a huge thumbs up every time I nailed a section of the track.

I'm heading back on Sunday to work on my shifting and corner exit speeds. I was signed off to run solo today but I think I need more instructor time, and more time in traffic to get things where they need to be.

Fantastic man, glad to hear it went well. So are you racing in the mustang series? or just renting and racing in our GT series... all on the track at the same time, i just dont know what the retnal cost is... may be cheaper to run with us.

WOLFPACK!

You guys might not know this, but I consider myself a bit of a loner. I tend to think of myself as a one-man wolf pack. But when my work brought Mark Gauthier in, I knew he was one of my own. And my wolf pack... it grew by one. So there... there were two of us in the wolf pack... I was alone first in the pack, and then Mark joined in later. And eleven months ago, when Mark introduced me to you guys, I thought, "Wait a second, could it be?" And now I know for sure, I just added two more guys - Carey and Greg - to my wolf pack. Four of us wolves, running around Calabogie together, in Arnprior, looking for lap times and flip flops. So tonight, I make a toast!

The CMP Mustang Experience is not an FFR sanctioned event. FFR does not recruit, nor does it accept applications. It does not accept new members unless surpriise blowjobs are given to the founding members, at which point you may be appointed depending on your performance.

What do you guys do when you're in traffic to keep on your line.....I keep my eyes on the next objective (apex, exit, etc) but I find that keeping an eye on the whereabouts of the car in front distracting... I guess being in the front would fix that problem but since I'm new that won't be happening a lot.
