Greg and I where discussing the 'data logging / lapping timer' technology last night. Most of the pro/amateur shit out there is 'retardely' (over)priced.

Just wondering who out there is using an iPhone to get info about their lapping? And more specifically what apps are you using? And finally what is the coolest/shittiest thing about the app?

IIRC this is the one Mattluh uses.

http://web.me.com/hschlangmann/LapTimer_Homepage/Home.html

I recall him putting it in my car, while I had the Turn 2 timer on my car as well and they were identical times.

I use the CMSlaptimer...works well enough...but not nearly accurate enough...especially when you are trying to shave a second or less.

If someone smrt wants to help me with the math and logic, i'll put one online for 99 cents. Beta testers get it free =)

I've got it tracking / etc working, its just the stupid detection of a new lap based off previously crossed GPS coordinates that's breaking my head.

Even threw in some "max angle" and "max speed" tags, fun for us bike guys so we'll know where we leaned over the most on a given lap.

Ghey Marc, got some free time?? :P

The ones i've seen, you actually select a point where you want your lap to start/finish and the app will use the coordinates that are the closest to that precise point to do a start finish.

Example: In Bogie, when you are in the pits, select a point near the tower. Everytime you pass by the tower, lap resets.

Eh, the wonders of being able to develop iphone apps is if you DONT want to pay you just make your own version, and even if you don't sell it you learn a lot and wind up with reusable code for other projects. Hence why i'll give Mechs a bunch of code to build the lap timer if he wants, i've got other projects i need that code for and i KNOW i'll never finish the lap timer

Newb IPhone question here, do you need to have a service provider to use the GPS for lap timing?

Ie: I buy a broken IPhone, can I use it as a lap timer without having to buy a data package.

I assume not.

To my understanding the iPod/Phone/Pad GPS functionality does not allow for turn-by-turn or live navigation like the popular GPS devices from TomTom or Garmin. The GPS unit simply picks up on locations and stores them for use with applications. For navigation or live processing, you need a data plan (or WiFi).

Incorrect. On the iPhones you can use the internal GPS with paid apps for proper turn-by-turn. It's just as accurate as most mass-market GPS units.

By the way...

LapTimer version 10 introduces the powerful concept of certified Track Sets. A Track Set is a set of triggers and other points of interest. Track Sets can be defined and submitted for certification. Once certified, the Track Set can be downloaded by any LapTimer user in the world.

Certified Track Sets allow a very easy setup of LapTimer for your favorite tracks. You just start LapTimer and download the Track Set you need. Everything is working automatically.

Using certified Tracks Sets, reliable comparison between times lapped is possible. In case online update is enabled on your device, times lapped will be submitted to Harry‘s Server. They can be compared as they are generated by the certified triggers contained in the track set. For Online Racing, please follow this link.

Tracks Sets can be simple collection of Points of Interest and Alerts too. In this case (no triggers), this sets are named POI Sets.

The remainder of this pages gives an overview on both the use and the creation of Track Sets and POI Sets. Your contribution is highly appreciated.

Can always use the iphone stop watch to compare too. If there is a lag, one would suppose the lag could be consistent?

insaner6
May 17th, 2011, 12:10pm
even at 100kph at the fastest update speed the iphone4 GPS supports there's a decent amount of lag.

Hell, even at 80kph on hunt-club i was well past the intersection when the GPS thought i was just hitting it. Works for turn-by-turn because it tells you to turn in advance usually, and when you are turning you've slowed down enough that it's update isn't that lagged.

Tried to tune it, there's really no option to make the GPS update faster, but basically your GPS data is "correct" it's just lagged real time.

So if it says you were doing 110kph in corner 2 at 2:10:10 you were actually going 110 in turn 2 but at 2:09:50 =)

In that light, if you cross your lap-marker, the GPS won't register it for up to a second but keep in mind the whole gps system is probably about a second behind.

I know if you have a hacked Iphone you can set the push notifications more frequent with email and push data also more frequent. The reason It seams laggy is save on battery power, it updates less frequent than plug in gps units.
Fore $16.99 I may try it out. I have a garmin as well, is there a web site with instructions for the app in conjunction with a portable gps?

My Iphone magically started pushing emails about 2 months ago. I'm with Rogers, and 15 minutes used to be the fastest it would check. Now, I get them just as fast as I used to on my BB. I had an app that was .99/month to push before, but I uninstalled it since I didn't need it any more.

I ordered the mount with gps receiver, it will help with the lapping application being more accurate and allow me to do hands free with the built in speaker on the mount. So win win, without the signal gps boost in the mount your position and timing from the app. Will be inaccurate.

Its for the IPod touch, so we cant use it with your device. But ya, you can check it out!

Something funny though, I've realized they sell you this device, but dont provide you the turn-by-turn software, you gotta pay $50 bucks for that (unless you're jailbroken), the device is just that, a GPS transimtter, you get a free toolkit and thats all. So if you want to use this as dual purpose timer/nav, you'll have to get the nav software.

So I played around with Harrys Lap Timer + IPod + Tom Tom Kit at Mosport.

I couldnt get it to work properly at all. It wouldnt pickup the Points of Interest from either my inputs, or loading the Mosport maps, so it was logging as 1 huge session. Ie: My lap time was 32:00 Minutes lol

I even let Mattluh tinker with it, then he tried his and had the same issue at Mosport.

He recalls having to manually set the start/stop Point at Calabogie; on the track.

Im a little annoyed because really, the only way to tell if your mods/seat time/driving has improved anything is timing.

From what I can tell from videos compared to last year at Mosport, Im about 2 seconds slower this year, maybe because of weather, lines, driving, not sure.

So in comparison;

2010 Video on a nice warm sunny day I was consistently 1:46ish
2011 Video on a slick, cold, misty day, the fastest lap I could find was a 1:48. (I wish I recorded my last few sessions, especially after tips from Yan).

Maybe its time to invest in an actual timing device.

Ok, I figure some of the issues out. If you have the Tom Tom mount when it is docked you have to pair your iphone to the Tom Tom device in the BlueTooth settings on your iphone and use code 5555.
This will enable the hands free, for what ever reason it doesn't work alone when docked you have to pair it.
You will also see Nuvi (GPS Signal booster) with a product number listed in your BlueTooth devices, you have to pair this as well using code 1234.

I thought when I paired the Nuvi (GPS Signal booster) to the phone via BlueTooth I would start to acquire satellites in the Tom Tom app. but no luck it still says" Docked" and "No Fix"

$100 headache for sure!

Hope this helps anyone with the mount. If I figure it out I will post the end solution.

Been playing with the app and TomTom mount all week in preparation for tomorrow. I think I have it all figured out now. Since we are running short track at Bogie and that's not available for DL I just choose "unspecified" as the track then walk over to the start finish line and set the "trigger" as "start finish" in the app? Then go to video and hit record and it should catch all my laptimes as I cross the trigger? Or should I wait to see if the video will begin recording automatically when I cross the trigger on the first lap?

For those with Android phones and are looking for something similar to Harry's, check out TrackMaster (http://trackmaster.trackaroo.com/welcome).

Bought it on the Android Market for $10, did some testing with it last night and it works amazingly. Love the option to start the timer when the car launches - great for autox.

Can also link with a 5Hz or 10Hz GPS receiver via bluetooth for more accuracy. Just reading through his developer forums, he actually interpolates the data on 1Hz (phone) GPS between data points, which averages out pretty accurately. A neat way to compensate for lack of GPS "hits".

Going to test it out at AutoX this Sunday and Bogie on Monday (assuming I'm allowed). I'm borrowing a friend's GoPro and will also test out the video overlay.

I bought the one you posted, tellum! It's wifi. iPhone and Blue Teeth wouldn't work for this.

I still don't know if I can select which parameter to overlay on the video.

Yep. Secondary air pump, which would make sense. It's kinda loud in the morning.

New version of Harry's LapTimer coming out next month... http://www.gps-laptimer-forum.de/viewtopic.php?t=1159 And it looks like it'll work and time sync with GoPro's.

This looks great! I'll have to dig into it some more but it sounds like you can just use the iPhone for the data and the GoPro for the image. If so, I'm very interested. Too bad I'll have to run it on my OLD 3G ;-(

Don't think the 3G can run iOS 5 which is a requirement. Better off picking up a used iPod touch.

I'm running iOS6 if i'm not mistaken. Assuming that's what this is telling me...

If anyone is interested, I can get you these units. I'll have one on me on May 3rd Greg evening if I come out. They are pretty cost effective too.

Connector shown is for a motorcycle application (Honda I believe), but there is an OBD2 version as well, which is what I'll have along side.

The unit I posted is a standalone unit. Doesn't need any other devices to work. It also allows you to do full data analysis as well.

The unit I posted has a "universal" model, which means you just get to wire it in to your sensors yourself. So if you know the pin outs on your ecu, should be pretty simple for you to do, given that you built an entire car yourself ;)

Ok so I recently received an iPad for work. I'm very green with it so my appologies if this is a stupid question; how/what do I need to do for making the use of it like Tellums demo? Do I need to buy cameras, mounts, cables what?

thanks

tellum

Just need software, obd wifi cable, and a mount so work iPad doesn't fly out window under 4G corners.

You can add cameras (like GoPro wifi one).

So I can do need cams, can't use the iPad one I assume? Is there kits available? I'll start googling I guess

tellum

You don't need an extra camera. Only if you want 2 angles at the same time. You can use iPad camera.

Get one of these for OBD data to display: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ELM327-WIFI-Wireless-OBD2-Car-OBD-Diagnostic-Code-Reader-Auto-Scanner-F-iPhone-/160866303864

Not sure what to do for a mount though. You'll want something heavy duty.

Huh awesome thanks Armandoman! I'll check my GoPro pretty sure it has WiFi, if not I'll have to see how I can use the iPad camera with the tab mount. could possibly be done for under $100 it seems.
