Gave me chills watching the trailer...

LONDON, Jan 30 (ITV Sport) - The film about the life of legendary world champion Ayrton Senna has won a prestigious award at the Sundance Film Festival in America.

'Senna ' director Asif Kapadia was presented with the World Cinema Audience Award for Documentary Film during Sundance's prizegiving ceremony last night.

The movie has attracted rave reviews from both the Formula 1 community and cinema critics since it was first screened in Japan and Brazil last autumn.

It will be released worldwide during 2011, with British audiences getting to see it in early summer.

The film chronicles Senna's dramatic F1 career, from his arrival with the small Toleman team in 1984, through his three titles, his rivalry with Alain Prost and his battles with officialdom, to his death at Imola in 1994.

So excited to see this film when it comes out. He was my idol when I was growing up. Still remember watching him mix it up with Prost, Mansell and Piquet. Michael who?

A member of the M3forum I visit saw the movie this week. Here is his take on it

Just got back this morning from Austin.

One word: amazing.

First, my criticism. It was too short, 120mins. The director was there and explained that his original cut was about 5 hours long but they had to cut a lot to make a theatrical version. But, there will be a DVD/BluRay version soon. This is my only criticism.

This film is a true documentary told by Senna himself. This isn't some documentary that is haphazardly spliced together to convince people of something. This is a biography, almost an autobiography as Senna mainly tells the story himself. This film doesn't get too deep into the technical side of F1 or racing but rather delves deeply into Senna's character and where he derived his motivation. You'll see why Senna was a hero to Brazilians and young people. You'll see Senna's journey from entering F1 to overcoming the tests of his journey to his peak and to the end of his life. They don't hold any punches in this film, it has some brutal scenes and it will make you cry. There's no cheesy voice overs from people that didn't know Senna. This is, by far and away, one of the most intimate documentary films I've ever scene. I am thankful to the Senna family for allowing us to take such a close look at Ayrton's life. Also, as much as most of us dislike Bernie, without his input in this production there literally would not have been a film. Some of the film you see has never been seen before.

The reason this film is so touching is because it literally takes you back in time from Senna's kart days to that terrible weekend in '94. It is as if you're watching this during that time period. This isn't a Michael Moore style documentary with an ax to grind. This is a true documentary and biography. There is no dramatic license, there is no skewing of facts. You'll see the flaws of Senna, you'll see the best of Senna. You'll see a real man who transformed the sport and his home country.

Asif Kapadia says there should be a wider release in the US sometime between June and August. However, he says that these will be very very limited and that there needs to be some support to prove to the production company that it will be a good movie to release in the US. I urge you, whatever chance you have, ask your local art theatres to bring this movie to your town.

Unfortunately, the Williams car was not there last night. But, Tavo Hellmund was there and so was a delegation of Forumla 1. There were F1 models walking around asking about the interest in the USGP in Austin. There is definitely some excitement surrounding USGP in Austin, even from the local hipsters that don't know anything about F1. Half of the audience last night had never heard of Senna's name ever, when they were asked after the film most of them said that the film was amazing and they never knew how much of an impact he had. They were pleasantly surprised. My GF, who doesn't really like F1 was nearly in tears at the end of the film. She loved it and felt that Senna was a hero to his country.

5 out of 5 stars. Best film I've seen in quite some time. This better than any dramatic film because Senna lived his life to the fullest.

My email to Mayfair Theatre.

Hello!

I am curious if Mayfair Theatre will be able to screen the movie "Senna".

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1424432/

It will be screened in Toronto on May 4th and 6th at TIFF Bell LightBox. http://www.hotdocs.ca//film/title/senna (http://www.hotdocs.ca/film/title/senna)

However; Im curious if it can be brought in to a local cinema.

Thanks

Hi Carey

Thanks for your suggestion. I don't think the film has a Canadian Theatrical distributor yet, but I'll put my feelers out and see if this is something we can bring to the Mayfair. Stay tuned ..

Thanks for the quick reply, I assume Toronto is only getting a screening because of the International Film Festival.

That's right. The Lightbox doesn't followed the Ontario Theatrical distribution laws -- and is pissing everyone off because of it. They live in their own bubble and they don't care about the little guy. Very frustrating -- but what can you do.

And from Bytowne.

Carey;

Hot Docs is a festival for new documentaries. Part of the reason it exists is to showcase new films, and to monitor reaction from the media and audiences. The reaction helps film distributors decide whether to release the movie to commercial theatres.

So, the film may become available to us later on, or it may not. It's too soon to tell.

Hope this helps,

Bruce

Yay, just finished watching this on VLC, as suggested by Carey.

Too bad there's so much dialogue in spanish, but an incredible film.

I stated watching F1 in 1987 so all the old footage really took me back. Man, incredible cars back then...so raw, just pure driver talent. Clutch pedals, shift levers, a steering wheels that looked like the one you'd find in your average Miata. Pit crews in shorts, no pitlane speed limits and no raised noses on the cars!

MP4/4, still what an F1 car should look like:
